COMPLETED - Project #3 - GSP Thinline Tele

Wasn't really planning on buying this, but having seen how some of the others had started turning out, I couldn't resist!

Guitar as it arrived:

Fancied doing this in Wudtone, as I don't have the skills to spray it and wanted to give it some colour, I went for Dairy blonde, I mixed the white and colour up so there was slightly more yellow in the mix, I did this by very crudely measuring the side of the bottle (in CM's!) and marking it out, this is the mix I came up with:

First coats done last night, using what has now turned into my 'test neck' (it was going to be for the Pink Paisley, but after seeing this neck from Grahame, I had to have another birdseye/birdseye)

Second application done today (now with a homemade guitar crucifix to hang it on to dry :

Really happy with how it's going so far, I went for the extra gloss finish, so hopefully I should be ready to start applying that by next weekend

Gotoh tuners have been fitted to the neck, pickups and other hardware TBD, will update as the purchases start!

The thin line build starts about half way down the first page and goes on to the second page.

I did give that colour some thought too, but for some reason or another felt it was better suited to a Strat

Managed to put another colour coat on last night, looks slightly lighter as there wasn't much sun light about this morning when I took them

Ok, I have to ask - how did the shape of the f-hole change between the 3rd and 4th photos?

Look more carefully, its a trick of the light, there is a perfectly formed f hole, you just can't see it too well!

As Paul said, it's the light, in the first photos the light has cast a shadow which makes the f hole cutout look black, whereas it's really just natural wood

Thanks! I can see it now after zooming in but that optical illusion really foxed my brain. I was checking the grain to try and see if it was two different bodies...

Day 4, might just try one more colour coat tonight then start with the clear

Cleat coat one on and drying (48 hours to go!). Looks more satin than gloss at the moment, but liking it

Tort pick guard also ordered so I can compare.

Give it a good few days between top coats. I know it's annoying but trust me!

No panic to get it finished, so I'm taking my time (still yet to order pickups for it ). 

As per the destructions, once I've given it a third top coat, I'll rest it for 7 days before assembly.

Second clear coat went on last night, definitely more of a satin look, rather than gloss, I like it though, not even sure I will do a third coat.

Tried the white pick guard and a bridge setup on it before I applied the second coat, looks good, the bridge doesn't appear to line up, might just be bad placement, I'll check when this coat is dry

This is going to be such a pretty guitar. Liking your careful, "take your time" approach to the whole thing as well. It's really making me want to build a thinline myself...

Yeah, the gloss isn't like a poly finish. It's glossier than the satin, though.

I used gloss on my prs and satin on the p bass and prefer the satin by miles - easier to use and feels great. But I will still use the gloss on some stuff, it has a nice look about it - almost instant vintage.

I'm impatient by nature, but not much I can do to speed up the curing process and it's my first go at a guitar build, so being extra cautious, enjoying it so far though

Might be worth speaking to GSP for your thinline needs!

Thanks for that insight, how many coats would you normally apply on a 'gloss' finish? The instructions suggest up to 2 or 3 more coats?
