Chord Of The Week 11/10/14 - B / Bmaj7

Open position B is a big stretch and you have to use your thumb across the bottom two strings - 

B: x21402 (Play 5th string with thumb)

But Bmaj7 is a bit more manageable, although you have to curl your little finger quite a long way to the 3rd string -

B7: x21302

Bmaj7: 799806 (thumb on 6th string) is pretty playable

Only if you have hands like Big Jon

I prefer 7x887x, fingering 1342, underside of 1 mutes 5th string

xx9 11 11 11 (the D shape) works OK

If you don't need a root there's always xx4446 or x64446 (pinky on top string)

Nice sounding chord, that, the open b drone lends itself to other interesting voicings with other chords.

7 x 8 8 0

as it frees up other fingers for moving the bassline for some nice progressions, e.g.

7 x 8 8 0  

0 x 8 8 0

4 x 8 8 0

2 x 4 3 0
