Bernard Hill, actor, 79.

Probably best known for film roles in Titanic and Lord Of The Rings. To me, he will always be Yosser Hughes in The Black Stuff and The Boys From The Blackstuff.
You say, atom bomb. I say, tin of corned beef.

Yes, very sad. Shame that he only relatively recently started getting the quality roles that he deserved.
"Gizza job. Go on, Gizza job."
TV at it's hardest hitting, social commentating best. RIP Bernard/Yosser.

Heartbreaking,   I wonder how many people actually watched rather than just knowing the phrase.  His situation was heartbreaking, he couldn’t do the jobs, but had kids/family to feed, but was at and past his wits end.  But very few appreciated that.

I found it the most harrowing aspects of a play/series which was full of similar feelings

Definitely met a few real life Yossers, and Shake Hands in my time. Scary in a way that these were not charicatures, but just representations of real life in deprived Liverpool back then! And he absolutely nailed it.

    RIP Bernard

It may have been a drama but he acted it so well it was heartbreaking to watch his mental deterioration. Yosser was probably my favourite ever characters on screen along with the other psychotic headcase Begbie (Robert Carlyle).

I remember watching Boys From the Black Stuff when it was first broadcast in 1982. I was 10 and I recall it being quite uncomfortable viewing and weird. I was probably too young to appreciate it's political relevance at the time.

For about 30 years after, I never realised BFTBS was a follow up of the same characters from a 1980 TV play called Black Stuff. I watched that on YouTube and can recommend it if you haven't seen it.

    R.I.P.

Great actor RIP, he was also in "Fox" with loads of other great actors before Boys from the Blackstuff (Larry Lamb, Peter Vaughan and more...)

RIP Yosser. Watched you crumble as I was leaving school in Thatcher's Britain. I'll never forget that performance.

Still think that people get hung up on “Giz a job”, when the most powerful line is the one after “I can do that; I can lay bricks, I can build walls”.  That’s how we met him and he would do anything whether he could or not,  that was where he had got to and past his wits end.
