Chord Of The Week 15/11/14 - chords with open E & B strings xxxx00

You can get lots of lovely sounds by combining different chord-shapes on the bottom four strings with the ringing chiming sound of the open 1st and second strings. It's not very fashionable, but the one that comes first into my head is 'Mandela Day' by Simple Minds, which is F#m7add11 2xx200. Also in a Metallica song, can never remember which one but @mike_l will know, the sequence descends through E5 079900 to D5add6add9 x57700 to Cmaj7 x35500. And in A Design For Life by Manic Street Preachers, the picky riff is built around Cmaj7 x35500.

Here are the useable CAGED shapes:
Cmaj7: x32000
Asus2 (or A5add9): x02200
G6: 320000
E: 022100
Em: 022000

For some reason I'm doing a lot of 567800 and 11 10 9 8 0 0 at the moment with B in the altered dominant. Or 456700 as an E dominant. You'll have to tell me the chord names though!

I always 'heard' open strings in Joan Armatrading's music, though I never saw her play live or even watched a video of her playing.

I think that she uses the following pattern on, for example, All the way from America.

    O221OO

    O776OO

    7998OO

No idea what those chords are called apart from the first, which, is E

Well if you look carefully at the compendium in my first post you will see that the other two chords are Aadd9 & Badd4!
