  • A passive bass would definitely benefit from something unless your desk has a high impedence input. Even a basic DI box would do or there are various bass DI pedals on the market.

I use a Trace Elliot TAC1 dual compressor pedal which gives me a bit of eq balancing as well as compression.

Depends on the sound you want I should think?

If just a bass "grunt" the HF loss incurred from a 10k Ohm desk line input should not be a bother.

If on the other hand you want a snappy, slappy, popping bass sound use some form of buffer or (best active) DI box.

"We" gave up micc'ing a 15" bass cab years ago because you can't stop everything else in the room rattling!

In fact I have just donated the cab to our local Labour club for their Jam nights!

    Dave.

    I use my AxeFx
One of those little amp modelling pedals might be useful

Mmmm...I use the Presonus Studio Live desk, and it has lots of presets for instruments which does work well, I just seem to be lacking a bit of gain before it gets to the desk.

  • If it's a decent studio, straight into the Desk for me, never had an issue getting the sound by DI'ing best way by far imho

A di'd bass is pretty common, whether it sounds right or not just depends on the production - a d.i. Will never sound like a decent bass cab, and vice verse. Sansamp d.i. pedals/vst effects are pretty awesome.

This. My sansamp Para Driver is a stunning little box for bass. Geddy uses the rack version

    Loads of options.

Aside from my Tech 21 VT Bass-DI and the dedicated DI on my amps - I get a really good sound with a Line 6 Sonic Port into Amplitude using the B15 bass model (far better than the SVT model on there)

I use the line out on the Sonic Port and away we go!

  • The B15 is the only one I can get a halfway decent sound out of too
