Most famously used on Sex Machine, the James Brown chord is a 9th formed from a C-shape with a barre from the third finger across the top three strings:

Eb9: x65666

Slide into it from a fret below, and toggle with Eb9add13 x65668 for the full effect.

flattening the 3rd finger across the GBE strings while keeping the last 2nd finger joint rounded enough not to foul the D string is tricky

It's a classic blues shape, heard all over T Bone Walker and a lot of Chicago blues. I think you'll find this shape in the original and a lot of the later versions of Stormy Monday,for example. The add 13 is definitely a T Bone trick, I think I last encountered it in Funky Kingston by Toots and the Maytalls ( although I wouldn't swear to it), probably not bothering with the root.
