Chord Of The Week 14/3/15 - The Prince chord no1 - E9(no3rd)/D

Prince has got two characteristic "Can't play the chord without being reminded of him" chords, and here's the first one.
Occurs at 0:15 in the video linked below, it's the opening flourish to the song 'Kiss'

A couple of beats of rapid strumming on the chord E9 with an unusual voicing. The root note is at the top, the 3rd is missed out.

E9(no3rd)/D: x x 12 11 12 12
This is voiced low to high - 7th (D), 9th (F#), 5th (B), root (E)

The full chord would be E9 12 11 12 11 12 12, which is the James Brown chord (see http://www.thefretboard.co.uk/discussion/33177/chord-of-the-week-31-1-15-the-james-brown-chord ) dropped by a string! So any time you might use a James Brown E9, consider using a Prince E9 instead!
