Last week we started to delve into how Allan Holdsworth voices various common chords, with the routine-sounding but tendon-stretching Cadd9/G chord x 10 10 7 5 x. This chord prompts the instant question, how would Allan play the closely-related Cmadd9 chord, formula 1 b3 5 9 , notes C Eb G D? It would be nice to just drop the E down to an Eb, but the E note is the the 2nd string fret 5, so the simple solution of x 10 10 7 4 x with the Eb at fret 4 on the 2nd string is unrealistic, requiring a 6-fret stretch for our already-suffering sinews. . . .
Ha ha, this is Allan Holdsworth we're talking about, right! With his mutant pond-skater fingers, doubtless caused by the chemical waste environment of Bradford during his formative years, he just plays it!
Cmadd9/G: x 10 10 7 4 x
