Squier VM Jazzmaster - Blank Canvas

What's Hot
So...yesterday, I picked up this rather excellent condition Squier VM Jazzmaster:

image

Complete, just needs rewiring - and more importantly, very £Cheap! ;)

So...what to do next?

Just return it to stock so it's immediately playable, then decide?

Immediately take the plunge and do some modding? For instance, I have some NOS 1977 Jazzmaster pickups which would be right at home (although these were earmarked for another project).

And more importantly, does anyone have some interesting bits to bung in there? :)

@meltedbuzzbox, @GavHaus, et al - suggestions on a postcard to...

:)

Ah, you bought it... I saw it on FB. :-)

Get rid of the pooh-burst and the corned beef pickguard, sort the fretting (you can correct the choking above the 13th fret with some careful stoning and re profiling). Grab a set of Mojo pickups and a bridge of your choice, slot in a Staytrem arm and collet and BINGO.

Better Nut and tuners made a significant difference to my Mascis too. Also thought the vibrato unit was pap, but it depends whether you use it much I guess.

I did indeed, Tim - local-ish to me, totally genuine seller and @ £85, how could I resist? :)

I'm going to cast around for a few parts options (on here) before hitting eBay - you're right, the scratchplate is a bit nasty.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the stock pickups in those. They aren't that bad at all.
A staytrem 9.5" bridge would do wonders too.

but sorting the frets and the nut would be top of my list

    and witch hat knobs ;-)
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

I've just shielded, rewired and added a Mustang bridge (courtesy of @Impmann)...

The original shielding on the scratchplate had been partially scraped off - getting the rest off was a PITA.

I've just finished putting it together and it works (yay!) - for now, I managed to re-use the old pickup mounting screws.

Whilst I do fully understand the insatiable itch to tinker, I must ask, before you do, to please explain exactly wtf is wrong with it as it is?? :D

That looks really nice. Honestly don't see an issue.

Depends whether you mean the issues quirks inherent in the design of Jazzmasters/Jaguars generally or those inherent in the Squier VM range! ;)
