Late Sixties Marshall Super PA 100W Head

Year of manufacture 1969 Test date on the paper label on chassis is 18th June 1969

Model Number 1968

Serial number SP 1***A three of the numbers have unfortunately been scratched out

Mains transformer, output transformer and choke are all original. The choke has the code C1999 on it but there are no other visible codes. Electrolytic can capacitors on outside of amp are original

The Bulgin mains socket is original and a Bulgin mains lead is included in the sale

No modifications have been made to the amplifier

The power indicator light is original but doesn’t light up

Cabinet is the large box type and the tolex covering and handle are original

The amplifier is working and has been checked for electrical safety

Interesting points: 4 dual electrolytic filter caps inside the amp are mounted on the single long main circuit board similar to earlier ones from ’67 and ’68. These look to have been re-soldered at some point

Over 95% of solder joints inside the chassis are original with red dye clearly visible. Capacitors and resistors on circuit board are all original

The front aluminium panel only has MP rather than JMP but it does not look like the “J” has been removed!

The four 12AX7 pre-amp tubes are all Brimar and may be original

Non-original parts: 1 new foot

New Marshall logo has been added to the cabinet

Metal grill on rear panel has been replaced with product very similar to the type used on top vent

Metal cap on one of the volume control knobs has been replaced.

4 Electro Harmonix Power tubes




This amp from June 1969 is one of the earliest ones with aluminium front and rear panels and is very similar to the last “plexi “ era of amps. This is an excellent opportunity to get the highly sought after plexi sound without the plexi price tag.

These Super PA 100s were used onstage by (amongst others) Free and can be easily modded to sound like the Super Lead amps so favoured by Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen etc . Angus Young of AC/DC is said to have used these early metal face amps on their early albums and tours.
