A maj9 chord is an extension of a maj7 chord, so yes, that counts! Lots of goodies around frets 5-7 for this one...

I like the one with the root on the 5th string voiced x R 5 7 3 x eg Dmaj7 x 5 7 6 7 x
And the maj 9th voiced x R 3 7 9 x eg Dmaj9 x 5 4 6 5 x - I like the sound of it but getting my fingers onto it is always tricky.

That's x02120 and x02100 for Amaj7 and Amaj9, as already proposed by myself and Viz! A variant which I like is
Amaj9: x02424
which is itself an extension of
Amaj7: x02224
