Recommend me some heavy blues

No, not Viagra or Chinese beer, heavy blues music is what I'm after if such a thing exists.

Been loving Hendrix again of late, well it never really goes away but I'm just playing it a lot and the mind wanders in my nigh on constant hungover state if there's some cool stuff I should hear. Blues but really aggressive, dark or maybe just frightening loud stuff.

Cheers.

Doesn't get much heavier than "Hard Again" by Muddy Waters.

I'd suggest Howlin Wolf, His voice is unearthly & sounds evil... I love it!
    Here's Gasoline:

For more current stuff Clutch are superb & often VERY bluesy.
Here's Electric Worry (featuring Eric Oblander, of Five Horse Johnson- also worth investigating). This song is the reason I took up harmonica.

My favourite heavy blues track is She's Missing by Walter Trout. Mesa Boogie stack flat out, I always try and reproduce that blossoming of the final note to the major 3rd feedback harmonic when I do a song in E at the blues jam :-)

  • +1 for Howlin' Wolf

John Lee Hooker also for an unearthly & menacing voice

Cream if you want heavy and progression but respecting the original

Groundhogs if you want heavy & blues influenced but a bit further away from the original forms

Jeff Healey's first EllPee See The Light had some good stuff on it

I never thought of SRV as "heavy" but his whiteboy blues is production-wise more "aggressive" than for example Freddie King. However you should listen to Freddie if you haven't already.

"Working" software has only unobserved bugs. (Parroty Error: Pieces of Nine! Pieces of Nine!)
Seriously: If you value it, take/fetch it yourself

    @deijavoo

Based upon this, Pantone 2965 would appear to be the best option

The Mystic Krewe Of Clearlight - s/t

Probably not what you mean by 'heavy blues', but it is bluesy and it is very heavy. Well, it has Jimmy Bower in it, it will be heavy and bluesy.

@Fretwired - looks like we both reckon Junior Kimbrough counts as heavy blues.  North Mississippi Hill Country blues always seems to nail that head swimming with whisky, dance in the dark 'til you pass out vibe!

Even played on an acoustic, turn the volume up and it starts messing with my head.  For me that's what counts as 'heavy'.  All the business with overdriving amps is just a way to get the music heard when there's a bar full of pissed folks.

Depends a bit what you mean by heavy blues, but anyhoo a few thoughts...

Firstly +1 for Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker, and Muddy Waters.

    Elmore James

Dr Feelgood - any of the first three albums. More rhythm'n'blues than pure blues, but sometimes quite menacing.

George Thorogood and the Destroyers - Greatest Hits is a good place to start.

Johnny Winter - I quite like the album, Second Winter.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

Rory Gallagher.. the live stuff is a good place to start. Live in Europe and Irish Tour.

Allman Brothers Live at the Fillmore.

Peter Green era Mac was quite heavy near the end.
