    Pretty cool.

Back to the Future was about 30 years ago if I remember correctly. Class films.

I read about Lexus doing this a little while back. Gonna be like 5 Friedman heads and 2 R9s worth probably, and I never could skateboard.

    I'm still extremely excited though!!!!

Purpose built skatepark to make it happen, but it happened!
Love how they got the overwater bit in too.

Unfortunately the track on which the board runs is probably a lot more expensive than the board to build considering how many magnets need to be embedded into the ground.

It's a bit of a cheat tbh, as anything with magnets on the bottom will probably float on that track. The superconducting bit is just to maintain the distance and stop the board from springing into the air when you get off it.

The real challenge is to make one that works on any surface...

Of course @Maynehead, but everything has to start somewhere and this hasn't been done before.

The Japanese might have a word to say about it never having been done before...

Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.

agreed, have you tried kick-flipping a train?

I read that after the video was filmed the skate dude nearly bust his ankle falling off and it spoiled the press demos.
Apparently the balance point is a fingers-width line running front to back.

As a tech demo it's very exciting though - years from now we'll all be whizzing around like the green goblin...

Shanghai is in China and the train is German designed.

They have to line the entire world with magnets for that to work. It's pretty useless until then.

Flippin brilliant - and the videography is great in that promo.

How ?  It's magnetic levitation.  How, apart from the train being a lot bigger, is it different ?

The trains use powerful electromagnets and consume power in operation - this doesn't.

Yes, but liquid nitrogen is hardly practical either, and this effectively does consume energy, since you need a supply of liquid nitrogen to keep it going. I wonder how many times they had to refill the board for that demo?

It's undoubtedly very cool and a nice tech demo, but that IMO is more of a "hover track" than a hover board, since once you go outside the limits of the track the board is useless, which isn't clear in the video.
