I'm really enjoying the new Cloudkicker record. Down I Go, Heck, Enablers, Faith No More and Tacoma Narrows Bridge Disaster also up there. Not totally certain on release dates on some of these but they are over the last year-ish.

Not really a guitar hero fest, but The Weather Station, What Am I Going To Do With Everything I Know has been the album (EP?) I've played most this year. Also liked...

    Tame Impala - Currents
    Stealing Sheep - Not Real
    King Gizzard - Quarters

I don't think I've bought any albums that were released this year to be honest.
Me neither I'm sad to say. Got Gregory Porter's 2013 album Liquid Sunshine which is beautiful, and some 2015 singles but otherwise a dry year.
I saw Gregory live in the summer and he was stonkingly good.

Awesome! - was that with Vula Malinga accompanying?

  • Well, this thread is depressing. I haven't bought a single new album this year :( I think that's the first time ever.

I'm going to go with I've no idea. He did a few British dates including Moseley - outside on a summer evening in a park. http://i1278.photobucket.com/albums/y513/phlplls/Mobile Uploads/2015-12/7D77E071-9CED-4BB7-9A25-AD8054CDAC50_zps2ipyk0o8.png

    +1

I downloaded a few and was a bit disappointed all round. Muse, Darkness, Coldplay, Blur all have good stuff in their histories and released thoroughly meh records. Darkness were the best of that bunch.

Noel Gallagher's Chasing Yesterday was my highlight, I guess. Quite liked that one.

As I said earlier in the thread, I've bought very little.

When I've got some free time over Christmas, I intend to check out some of the stuff mentioned here - I'm hoping I'll pick up on some things I enjoy.

I find BBC6 Music a good way of being exposed to new stuff as well - and that's really the issue for me - getting to hear it in the first place.

"The Killer Instinct" - Black Star Riders
The musicality, the trademark Thin Lizzy twin lead guitars, the slight shift from cheesy lyrics to a more serious front, BSR continued their "war" theme with a solid album. Much better than the first. Very impressed and still enjoy it. The more serious side was what they needed.

Thanks for this info @Octahedron, I did not know that BSR had released another album.  I will look out for this when next in Dublin.  I have "All Hell Breaks Loose" and I like it.  Someone on this forum suggested I get it when I asked for suggestions.... A good buy.

    Best albums for me:

Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly
    Clarence Clarity - No Now
Everything Everything - Get to Heaven

    Honorable Mentions:

Public Service Broadcasting - The Race for Space (great shout @Moss, fab concept album)
    Periphery - Juggernaut Alpha/Omega
D'Angelo and the Vanguard - Black Messiah

    Disappointment of the Year:

Bring me the Horizon - That's the Spirit (was hoping for a return to 'There is a Hell...', didn't happen) - sorry @Bucket!

Sarcasm is often hard to detect in writing. If in doubt - yes, I was taking the piss.

I couldn't get into the new Goatsnake album.

Mgla on the other hand has been played a lot. Have you hear their other band Kriegsmachine?

Hello Mark, BTW. Did you Enjoy Pentagram?

  • Bought quite a bit this year, but much of it was catching up on older releases. The stuff released this year that I've enjoyed:

Incubus - Trust Fall (Side A)
    Steven Wilson - Hand.Cannot.Erase
Anathema - Distant Satellites (though it kinda feels in someways like latter day lineup peaked with We're Here Because We're Here)
    Rivers & Rust - s/t

Got high hopes for the new Baroness as well from the tracks available so far.

I must investigate some of these, although most are probably a bit too much on the heavy side for me.

Good day Alistair! Pentagram was pretty rockin, plus the guitar tone was colossal.

Not heard Kriegsmachine, tbh I only just found out about Mgla 3-4 months ago or so! New Goatsnake I think is fantastic, they haven't missed a beat since FoD. Pretty miffed how I forgot about Christian Mistress as well. Also, The Shrine's new album has been constantly played for the last few weeks.

Christian Mistress are really cool old school melodic metal with female vocals.
Mgla is pretty epic sounding although very bleak and nihlistic.
Sorcerer is epic doom. Think early Candlemass meets early Swedish meta (Silver Mountain/PROUD/Malmsteen)
Ranger is like KEA era Metallica meets Exciter.
Macabre Omen is classic Greek black metal with a huge dash of Viking-era Bathory.
Tau Cross is the continuation of Amebix but with Away from Voivod on drums. Killing Joke fans will probably love it.
