My Band - your thoughts

What's Hot
shaunmshaunm Frets: 1598
Alright all,

This is a bit of a gratuitous thread about my band.

I joined this band last October and last week we went into the studio to do a bit of recording. I thought I'd throw it out there for you guys to have a listen to and see what you think?

As I'm posting it on here and we are all geeky I will detail the very basic gear I used.

Guitar wise it's either a MIM 60's Classic Tele or Sheraton with BKP queens in into two of @martinw MJW creations (MJW 5e3 Bantam and Standard Roadstar) via a Band of gypsies fuzz face, an old Vox wah and a @juansolo reverb.

Hopefully we will have the rest of the album finished in time for festival season.

Thanks
Shaun

    Thank you @TTony

  • Really like your playing - great tone and 'groove'.

If I'm honest, found the vocals a bit lacking in character - a bit 'generic' may be....

But I can't sing for toffee - so in no position to judge really.....

  • ^ this. Your playing is great. Your singer has that kind of voice that I detest most sadly, but that's personal preference - reminds me of Hurricane #1 vocally.

Interestingly, if I Google your band's name, the 10th hit comes back to a post here (an amps FS thread).

@TTony I try to do my bit for the forum.

@RichardHomer and @GavRichList thank you for your kind words about my playing. It's nervy putting your playing out there on a guitar forum.

Signings a tough gig because it's such a personal thing. I mean some people like the pet shop boys vocal? I'm a fan of our lad (of course) but I respect all opinions. Someone said he sounded like the guy from INXS the other day, I didn't get that. Maybe they know more about his bedroom habits than I do....

  • Nice work, really tight and catchy. Sounds really professional and your tone and playing are spot on. Good luck with it all.

Not my cup of tea but you have something.

If I'm honest as well, there's a very slight tuning issue on My Cocaine that really grates (on my ears anyway).

    Good luck.

  • Yeah, I'm also not liking the vocals, not bad by any stretch, they are well delivered and I can hear the words which is nice. He's just a bit dull.

Can't fault the playing though and it's a good recording.

  • Its not really my thing, but great playing, great tones and a good recording.  The singer sounds like he just needs to push himself a bit harder.

More than likely my playing rather than tuning. I specialise in putting standard tuned guitars into alternate tunings by bending inaccurately

i thought it was really good Mate....singer sounds like he is playing it safe though....initially i thought it was an "oasis" track, what with the drawl an all....that aside great stuff, i can certainly see lots of people liking it a lot.

Sounds great and should have wide appeal - well played solo too. I was expecting the vocals to be weaker having read the comments, but thought they were ok - his voice reminded me of kasabian, stereophonics, and strangely, enuff z'nuff! For my tastes I'd prefer a little less drawl, but lots of people seem to like that

  • Good stuff. I think the vocals are fine but to me there might be a discrepancy between the band style and how you expect the vocal to sound and maybe that's where the criticisms are coming from.

I think the singer should (and it's just a thought) consider dropping the US accent, and move to more of his natural accent. On the first track especially, I could hear hints of a British accent trying to break through the US twang, and I suspect his natural accent would be at least as interesting to listen to, and a bit more "real" somehow. Don't get me wrong, I think he's an excellent singer, and that's just something to consider.

The guitar work - both playing and sound-wise seems excellent, and the whole band tight and focused, with a lot of energy. Overall, pretty good really, and I wish you and the band the best of luck for the future. :)

  • I thought it all sounded strong and professional. I agree with the constructive criticisms of the singer, especially the US accent, but also agree with the positive comments about him too.

My main issue is actually the drums - Perfectly solid but for me very samey all the way through and lacking the kind of dynamics that could really elevate the songs.

Also, I think there are parts where the underlying chord or bass note could be varied a bit more instead of staying on the same note/ chord, just to bring a bit more - again, dynamics to things.

Minor points, as the tracks on the whole sound very good. Put it another way, if I was a venue looking for originals bands to give gig slots to, the demo would be more than enough for me to take a punt on your band.

Thank you very much for taking the time to have a listen. All feedback is useful.

Thank you for being kind regarding the guitar playing. Like I said before it's a little nervy putting your guitar playing out there on a forum that's has so many fine players.
