Abba just lends itself to be rocked up. Almost any song works well.

    Lady Gaga is the same.

We've done Ghotbusters, Thriller, I think we're alone now and Poker Face and they worked well. We're currently looking at combining Motorcycle Emptiness and Jessie J's Price Tag since the chords are quite similar.

Gun's Word Up is a good shot and we're seriously considering an 80s combo of One and Only, Tiffany and Rick Astley. Might work, might die a death but you gotta try this stuff....!!
I think we're alone now was a cover by Tiffany. Originally by Tommy James and the shondells. An utter classic.

Odd things that I've had success with in the past.

Erasure: Take on me (Reel big fish style)The Levellers: Beautiful dayJames: PrettyDexi's midnight runners: come on Eileen (Save Ferris version)Madness: One step beyond (I play sax too, so this worked)

Also used to start a set with Pulp Fiction theme, that went down well.
    Presumably you mean Misirlou?

Playing Come on Eileen is almost compulsory in the West Midlands.

Certainly was for my band .....until I became the singer. Have you seen how many words are in some of the lines of the second verse?!

    Inspection Check One?

Not sure it's left field but 'Hip to be Square' by Huey Lewis.

'So What' by ANL - you might have to close with that though.

We do LOADS of left-field stuff like this. Will post when I remember them lol!

    Turning Japanese
    I Kissed a Girl
    Bad Romance
    Left Outside Alone
    Papa Don't Preach
    Does Your Mother Know
    River Deep, Mountain High

And although we don't rock it up, Footloose is a belter!

+1 on Turning Japanese. The punters have a "no, they can't be?!... they are!!" moment of realisation when we start it.

We've done Shang a lang, Wig wam bam and Blockbuster before. Virginia Plain is good too.

Good shout. I had the pleasure of playing that with Tent Pole himself at the Forum in London one night. Absolutely lovely guy but as mental as he looks! :-)

    Monster tune.

Gnarls Barkley covered Gone Daddy Gone on the album with "Crazy" on it. Good tune.

I know that band from my time in Canada. I think its made up of otherwise quite well know new-punk artists or something like that. I have a couple of their albums, and whilst they're a one trick pony, that trick is quite good fun

yeah they are a punk supergroup... I think one of the Foo Fighters is in it....but they are good fun and I thought they would be a good source of material for the OP... :)

Yeah, it was a good call. Certainly shows what can be done with covers for sure.

One of my bands does ONLY left-field stuff, and the punters love it. We don't touch any of the usual standards that they hear all the time. Some of the ones that go down the best:

    Mr Blue Sky
Chaz n Dave (Rabbit and Ain't no pleasing you)
    Let's Dance (Bowie)
    Nutbush City Limits
    Mamma Mia
    Love Is In The Air
    Baggy Trousers
    Timewarp
    At The Hop
    Tiger Feet

etc etc. This is in an all bloke 5 piece with keys and two guitars.
Some of the gear, some idea

We didn't play too many covers but ones we did at various times in the life of the band that went down well were:

Invitation to the Blues - Tom Waits
My Favourite Dress - Wedding Present
Poison Street - New Model Army
    That's Entertainment - The Jam
    Funky Monks - RHCP
Ceremony and Novelty - both Joy Division
    Tiny Dancer - Elton John
How Deep Is Your Love - Bee Jee's

    Good call!

I've just started doing Jolene in my acoustic set - somewhere between the original and the White Stripes version, goes down a treat.
