NEW - Tone King - Ironman II Mini Attenuator

What's Hot

looks really good! best i have seen. pricey and big for "mini" but does things other attenuators do not. Like that fact is got the 3 position presence switch as when you bring the attenuation down your ears tell you you lose the treble or presence. nice!

The 3/6dB boost is a great idea - much more useful than a bypass.

It's only rated for 30W though. And only 8 ohms.

You are being generous Sir - it is stupidly expensive.

The Fryette power station is the same price and does this and quite a bit more.

And as has been said - pricey.  The Fryette Power Station is more I thought (PS is £500, I found one of these listed for £350 - was a quick search though so may be old price?), but offers a lot more flexibility as well.   Id either go something simpler, or the whole hog personally.  im sure it will have lots of takers though.

Good idea, same price as Suhr's Reactive Load.

A bit limited on the 30watt rating though.

    party spoiler ........
I had a Dr Z Air brake -the smaller one rated up to 30w and it was excellent
I have an Iron Man and it is not really any better but I paid £80 for the simple Dr Z
None of them sound great at Micro level - all good for down to 50 %

The original Iron Man was over £600 and was about the size and weight of a small amp. Really good, though.

I've got a Swart Night Light which I found to be better than the Dr Z. Don't need it any more if anyone wants it?

I have owner the fryette power station and although packed with features, it altered the sound of my setup.

So the dr z is worth checking out? The only real function on the ironman I like is the midrange presence switch and the boost

That's interesting - I've only heard praise for the Fryette so far.

What is your setup, and in what way did the PS alter your tone?

There is alot of tweaking you can do and I spent time switching from bypass mode to the ps to replicate the same tone but at lower volume and I couldn't. I think as its tubed driven it alters how the amp behaves and sounds.

I used it with my dr z remedy but it might work better with other amps

That's why the tone King has caught my eye as it's simpler, transparent, boost and presence.

I have an original Iron Man and whilst it's hefty and expensive I think it was worth the money.

It certainly sounded a lot better than the Air Brake that I had for a while, but that's my ears and my amps, so who knows, I'm not looking to argue with anyone else's experiences. I don't think they make them anymore anyhoo....

It's obviously a totally different kettle of fish to the Torpedo Reload or Fryette Power Station in terms of how it works...

If this new Iron Man is as good as the last one then it would get the thumbs up from me...shame it is only 30w though.

    Degrees of diminishing return
Not saying the Dr z is as good as the Ironman but I couldn't tell the difference with my cloth-ears
the question is .....s/hand Dr Z £80  v £390 Ironman .................no brainer as none of them are perfect

I'm curious about the Iron Man but the 30w thing killed it for me. Don't they all depend on which amp you use them with though?
I didn't think there was a one size fits all solution.

@Dominic horses for courses I think - if they both do what you need then obviously the cheaper one otherwise you're wasting cash that could be saved up for other things :-)

For me it was worth the extra moolah for the Tone King because I felt it responded better with my amps and I preferred the feel and sound of it...was it worth the extra cash...to me yes...to you I guess not...

EDIT: think this shows why it's so important to test attenuators with your own amps and set up if you can, they seem to be so variable and folks' preferences and needs seem to be more fineckety with these things than with anything else.

I know this sounds a bit thick, but why do you need to attenuate a 30 watt amp?
