Okay some of those replicas are actually very much spot on. The Gold LP with the split trapezoid inlays actually looks really good. The AFD copy's well done too. The only one I'm not sold on is the purple LP Custom. The headstock looks wrong.

Please, don't bother. There are some great deals to be had on the real thing, and unlike Les Paul replicas ( which are getting harder to spot ( to the novice)), the Gretsch faked look terrible, and fool no-one.

A friend bought a fake Gretsch out of curiosity, it was unplayable, looked terrible, and had no bracing - it slowly fell apart

They are almost impossible to sell on the used market, as Gretsch forums have Ebay and Gumtree take them down.

Get a lightly used Electromatic, Streamliner, or new G5420. Awesome guitars, and a bargain new or used.

I'd quite like a Chibson. I'd remove the logo though and customise it.

Is it worth the hassle though, don't they cost 250-300 when everything is added up and in theory they could be stopped by customs and taken leaving you out of pocket. For that money you'd get a pretty good 2nd hand Epiphone LP, maybe even a new one which I reckon would be a far better base to build on.

I can't stand the Epiphone brand, hate the headstock. To be honest I'd considered getting a Chibson (from the UK) to mod, but I won't now as I plan to make an LP from scratch at some point.
