Paul Weller using his Peavey Backstage 30 on this live version of Eton Rifles. he wasn't playing through the Marshalls stacked behind him. I asked him about it on the Paul Weller forum years back and he replied personally and said he used the Peavey on All Mod Cons and Setting Sons. I reckon it's on the lead parts on All Mod Cons and pretty much all of Setting Sons, sounds like it was used on Going Underground as well.

First guitar amp I ever had. Sounded good, steely is how I'd describe it, though I had to run it above its comfort zone to be heard.

I had a 1981 Studio Pro 40 with the SuperSat and Pull Thick control on the treble, was a workhorse and sounded good to me. Wish I still had it

The Backstage 30 was my first 'proper' amp. Well, one step up from my JHS15 Watter. I would have another at the drop of a hat if I needed a small combo. I love those old Peaveys - for years my main (and only) amp was a Peavey Classic Chorus 130.

Didn't his old man 'acquire' it from a Status Quo roadie or something?

Best early weller tones I've ever found were in a vox escort 30.

So it's like a mini-Bandit? I think all guitarists influenced by late 70s/early 80s post-punk stuff needs some sort of solid state amp...

The late 70s early 80s Peaveys were built in the US and were superb

Exactly like a mini-Bandit. All the Peavey amps of that generation used very similar circuitry, just with different power outputs and speakers, and more channels on the bigger ones.

I should probably look for another one, I've had a couple but sold them on to people who needed a decent cheap amp, when I wasn't really using them.

A good solid state amp is a *good amp*. A good SS amp sounds different and reacts differently to a good valve amp - and you tend to find it suits a certain sort of player. If you want that 'just breaking up blooz tonz' then it might not work for you...

I'm a big fan of the old HH VS amps (very much marmite - and the combos aren't much lighter than Wales), the SS Fenders from the early to mid 80s, Sessionettes (steady, @ICBM ;-) ) and these old Peaveys.... they all sound very different and have different strengths and weaknesses.

In fact, I'd far rather have a good SS amp than a mediocre valve amp... :-)

" HH VS amps" they worked for Stuart Adamson and Daniel Ash. This are the guitar tones I grew up with.

Also, as I posted elsewhere, Jake Burns from Stiff Little Fingers used a solid state Marshall Master Lead combo to get his growling live tone in the early days of SLF.

    So true!

Having never been of the 'blues traveller' persuasion, I was a die-hard SS fan until I got my Selmer T&B. And to be honest, what initially swung it was that I prefer to haul a separate head and cab up flights of stairs than the Carlsbro Super Stingray 2x12 combo I was using.

Having said that, I now wouldn't give up the Selmer!

My Backstage Plus gave good service for about 10 years as a practice amp. Until I suddenly decided that I don't like practice amps.

I took it into Spectrum Music at Whitefield and asked the owner to give it to somebody that really needs it. A few months later a guy bought a very cheap electric guitar and it was established that he did not have an amp and was not in a position to buy an amp. Would he like this one? Yes he would.

    Bloody communists..!

    ;)
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

Great, now I have Inverse Valve Snobbery...

I went straight on ebay last night after seeing this, there's one going for £30. My favourite band in the 80s always played through Bandits. Tempting...

Altai. No! That's a general purpose/car audio/mid-fi bass driver, and will probably sound rubbish for guitar even if it doesn't blow again - the power ratings on them are usually very optimistic for guitar use. The original would have been an Eminence (I think - possibly another older US manufacturer like Pyle).

The choice of what to fit is now huge, and comes down to personal preference. For me, I would go with another 'American-voiced' speaker, probably an Eminence from the Patriot range - Cannabis Rex, Li'l Buddy, Copperhead or Ragin' Cajun depending on what exact sound you want.

I have a Backstage 20 .I found the manual on line which informed me how to set up the EQ .both knobs have to add up to ten to balance out and stop it fizzing .I use others now but for a while it kept me going. It does have spring reverb and fine cleans  which suits my playing  style when I havnt gone all dads bluesy
