As per the title.
Any recommendations that don't cost the earth?
Jon Spencer has a lot to answer for.

For me Fuzz=Tonebender and Magnetic effects do a fabulous 'homage' to the Mkii professional.

What has John Spencer to do with the guitar BTW?

For JSBX sounds, get a Companion fuzz.  Frederic Effects do one, and a Super 2-in-1 version with a SuperFuzz chucked in.

He played Funk Guitar, so he had to be "In the Pocket" all the time.

    :)

Re Fuzz, I have only owned Suhr Rufus, I'm no expert, but it's versatile.

If you can find one try the Plum Crazy Fuzzy Lady. It's awesome.

I play guitar and take photos of stuff. I also like beans on toast.

Ghost Effects make some goodies. i have one of his Tone Benders, but he does some others, and price wise they're very good.

    @juansolo is the fuzz master.

I would go to the man personally
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

    Cheers!

To get that nasty/raspy fuzz you're looking at something old that doesn't behave with other things. Plenty will do that, nastiest IMO being the Ibanez Standard Fuzz. That can do all sorts of nasty. A Roland Bee Baa will also get you there quite easily and is a little more versatile.

There are germanium fuzzes that will get you there but they're so variable it's hard to recommend them. Some silicon equivalents/variants will do a better job, but again, they'll not play as well with things like wahs/buffered effects. Thinking things like the Silicon Mosrite Fuzzrite.

Things that behave tend not to be as raspy. The Jumbo Tonebender/ Fuzz Unit (Edwyn Collins - Girl Like You) has an edge of that old style rasp with none of the drawbacks. But it's nowhere near as velcro as the Ibanez of capable of the bite of the Bee Baa.

  • Standard recommendation of zoom ultra fuzz. Works with buffers, although behaviour changes, and gets bright and nasty if you want it to.

Blackout Effectors Fix'd Fuzz Deluxe, so many options with a boost and 2 separate fuzz circuits. Fuzz 2 is super nasty, combine with Fuzz 1 for even more awesomeness. Get a Seriously Special Twosome for a muff.

a derivative of a shin-ei/univox Superfuzz   (and some other early 70s Japanese fuzzes).   e.g.  Guyatone The Fuzz (used).  EQD Terminal.   for cheapz, the Behringer SF300 (a Boss FZ2 clone).

others above have suggested Tonebender mk2 but that doesnt match your descriptive criteria to me.
