Sorry...

Seriously though, has anyone tried the Milkmans (Milkmen?), which Andertons stock? They may have been around for a while but I've only just noticed them, yet another boutique brand to tempt us along with Carr, Louis, Tone King etc...

Never tried one but like the look of them, but they seem to be another price level again above the likes of Carr etc.

TGP reviews seem to say that they are good, nice but nowhere near the price levels. I have looked at them too as visually they look great...

Ironically, they led me back into Redplate land...

They look really lovely, very high quality and a nice modern/vintage aesthetic/sound. I wonder how different they are from Lazy J or @RiftAmps creations?

  • They were flavour of the month at TGP, though even there the hype died pretty quickly, which probably tells you something...

Tim's amplifiers are fantastic but the prices are somewhat eye watering, that's what happens when you sell boutique amps through a dealer network. I've done some sums...

Take the 20w 1x12" Creamer as an example - £2699

    subtract VAT (2699/1.2) - £2249

    then subtract Anderton's margin (30% on these) - (2249/1.3) - £1730

then subtract import duty rate of 3.4% (1730/1.034) - £1673 (no import VAT to recharge to customer as he'll claim it back)

Deduct shipping and other expenses, Andertons are probably buying these in for £1600 per unit, for reference the US retail price is $2899 (£2353 approx) - nice discount!

A very similar spec'd amp from myself and other UK builders is around £1300-£1500. If I sold it exclusively through a dealer network rather than 'direct to customer', it would easily be £700 more expensive.

Saying that, if the amp gives you that sound, then it's worth every penny (or cent).

Here we go, churning through the same cheesy jokes. No whey this should be happening; it's blood curdling. Where have you skimmed them from?
    Also, milk.

I heard they work best with a Gold Top (sound of tumbleweeds)

I tried one at Andertons a few months ago and I think it was the Creamer. I couldn't see what all the fuss. It was Fender Deluxe-ish and nowt particularly special about it. I certainly didn't think it warranted the hefty price tag.
Maybe I need to try some udder models!

In contrast that same day, I then tried a couple of the Morgan amps they'd just got in and they were fantastic and at least £500 cheaper. Now they are something special and loud for their wattage. I've since tried a couple at Guitar Guitar and for the first time, they're making me question my Divided by 13.

Presumably they do a decent sounding pint-sized amp?

And (if you take the electronics and speakers out) pick up your empties?

So I tried their best Milkman amp at Andertons.

Lee said "What do you think?"

I said "Its always lacked something."

He said "Bass, its always lacked Bass?".

"No", I said "Its always lacked ...er...."

    "Upper mids?"

    "No, its always lacked...them....er...."

He thought for a moment then exclaimed "Harmonics!!"

"That's right!" I said. "Its always lactose..."
