Roland said: Scales are primarily a tool for categorising knowledge, not a rule for what can or cannot be played.
Supportact said: [my style is] probably more an accumulation of limitations and bad habits than a 'style'.

  • It's not contentious, I find it hard to believe someone living in the 21st century would actually hold this view.

    Carol Kaye.

    Nita Strauss.

    Lita Ford.

    Orianthi.

Nita Strauss totally blew me away when I saw Alice Cooper a while ago. And I don't even like shred guitar.

    Emily Hastings.

Look at how much she enjoys what she's doing, just like Nita Strauss when she's playing, huge smile and that look in her eyes.

Chuck Garric, Alice's bassist told her to slow down, and play rock guitar rather than shred guitar. She listened.

Talking of other types of female musicians...  Have you ever seen Karen Carpenter play the drums...  This clip is just remarkable

Even in this current running thread you'll see there's a load of women playing guitars these days:

  • I can't honestly say I listen to many female guitarists but I don't see any obvious reason why they can't be every bit as gifted as a male guitarist. Those girls from the Iron Maidens are fantastic and I've long been a fan of Orianthi.

I was amazed when I first discovered that Karen was a drummer! It might not be very rock n roll but Karen's voice is just heart breakingly beautiful to me
