Finally got around to starting a new kit build - A 12 string Strat kit from Gear4music that I had for Christmas.

Got off to a shakey start as the first kit had a problem with the fingerboard/neck. The fingerboard wasn't the same thickness all the way down so had come unstuck from the neck, any attempt to fix it would have meant a twist in the neck at the first/second fret.

Anyway, replacement kit is here:

This is might take a while as it needs to be coloured & finished before assembly so updates to follow in due course

  • Can't wait, what colour ?
    Going for a dark teal colour, tortie pickguard & single chrome toaster-top pickup at the bridge.

  • Nice colour. You really should put a lipstick pup at the neck too

  • Nice colour choice. Looks good so far. Did you contact Gear4Music with the problem with the fretboard? I bought a jazzmaster kit from them for xmas 2014. Guitar was perfect. Maybe I was just lucky.

    Yes, the first kit went back for a replacement. It was unsavable & would have needed a new fingerboard.

  • Ok, so we're slowly getting there. All wired up:

    Problems so far:
    - Pickup route needed widening on the bass side so that the scratchplate would line up with the neck pocket;
    - Control cavity needs to be a little deeper to accommodate the three-way switch;
    - There's no wood under the top hole of the jack socket to screw into;
    - The neck screw holes were too big so the neck currently looks like this:

    Hopefully later today I can put the strings on...

    until you put it all together i wasn't into the body colour. thought it looked at bit pastelly.
    but with that retro toaster pickup & black knobs & the 'corned beef' scratchplate, it's got quite a cool west coast late 60s vibe to it. the azure & burnt orange really set each other off.

    congrats on getting so far.
    hofner hussie & hayman harpie. what she said...

    Thank you :)

    It's not an easy colour to photograph properly, it's quite a deep teal in the flesh.

    Now got as far as putting six of the strings on to find that the volume doesn't work properly - at zero it's still letting some signal through :/

    What did you use for the colour?

  • What did you use for the colour?
    Wudtone Lady Teal.

    Was hoping for a more solid colour with less grain showing but I think that would mean applying another bottle of the finish (maybe more)...

  • And finally finished:

    Spent yesterday afternoon solving the non-working volume control (forgot to earth the third tab on the pot) and strung it up.

    Really pleased with the result but the colour is really hard to capture in a photo.

    Will probably send it for a proper setup at next string change as the nut is a little high and the frets could do with a polish.
