WTB/WTT: Hardware Drum Machine/Groovebox

Anyone? CBA with laptops, etc.

Been looking at old-school stuff like MC-909's, Alesis SR-16's, etc, but newer stuff good too. Mix of "classic" sounds and modern-ish kits. Tending towards Groovebox-ish stuff at the moment because other sounds can be thrown into the mix.

Also, ideally something I don't need 16 fingers and a degree from MIT to program.

Have you looked at the Volca Sample?  It seems a very small and cheap way of getting both drums and wider sample types on the go with a lot of hands-on immediacy.  Lack of separate outs being the main weakness.

    Cheers - I'll take a peep! :)

Just been offered an MC-909 (the still seem a bit £steep for what I need, considering it's age) and I've borrowed an old Alesis SR-16 from work for the weekend.

  • How about a Boss DR-660?

When I bought it I was torn between the 660 and the SR-16 (I'd previously had the HR-16), I definitely chose the best option. It's worth it just for the 808 and 909 sounds - proper old school!

  • I am using a Novation Circuit at present, had it 2 weeks and love the thing, It has 2 * 6 note polyphonic Nova engine Synths and a 4 note drum track/sample player. but it also comes with polyphonic 16 step sequencers for each synth and a sequencer for the drum/sample parts.
The limitations are that they are fixed length steps but I am loving it as a groovebox.
