No, It really would waste their time.

There is no point in looking for a needle in a haystack without having some reasonable idea the needle is there in the first place.

If the security forces are looking at 10 (unrelated/unknown to each other) people, and one of those 10 has links to a known criminal, that's where the security forces will look. The other 9 who have no links or connections to known criminals won't get looked at. And IF they do, it'll be cursory. The security forces do not have the time and man power to search through every single thing.

They may very well use various technologies to see where the needles are in the first place, but the majority of people will have nothing to fear.
    Yet.

But what if the continuing right-wing-ification of Europe including the UK keeps happening... now they have all our data with unrestricted access - google for Koran passages and jail. Gay porn? Jail! Opinions that the current government don't like? Jail.

It all sounds far fetched - but these things have happened in countries without civil liberties - and how can you organise a resistance if everything* is "terrorism" and so the instant you mention it you go to jail - for terrorism so no one thinks your cause was worth pursuing, so even if the evil government gets over thrown you still rot in jail. We should never have our private conversations subjected to government inspectors as we don't know what their motives are/will be.

How about your browsing history makes you look like you wont vote the way they want, so they frame you for something minor, but you're in prison/court on the day of the vote, so can't oppose them... your satnav directs you away from poling stations?

Unfortunately people have voted in such a way that they'll get the powers they want - because by the time a law is drafted and ratified we wont have to listen to European courts, and we have no written constitutional right to privacy so, expect big brother to be in your phone** soon

*sad as the killing of Lee Rigby was, the killing of one passer by being labelled terrorism seems crazy - who was supposed to be terrorfied?

    ** more so.

People are dumb if they think the solution is more government. Concentrate all that power and one day somebody like Donald Trump might get their hands on it. The government has more than enough power as is.

Like in France and Belgium, this attack was perpetrated by somebody known to the government as being violent and holding extreme islamist views, Fat lot of good that knowledge did the victims. Banning Saudi trained Imams, Saudi funded Mosques and quietly shooting a few ISIS funding Saudi princes and Emirates business people would probably have a quicker and more effective result.

If you have nothing to hide you nothing to fear, except maybe the same access will give access to your passwords to paypal and your online banking.

If the government has access, then other people can have access.  It's either encrypted or it's not.

You need encryption to make online payments safe.  You can't ban it.

The politicians who think you can are idiots.

If you think someone totally innocent has nothing to fear, think again.

And that was caused by a simple mistake.

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

    "Just because I don't care, doesn't mean I don't understand." - Homer Simpson

And get a grip on what is going on in prisons. How many people seem to get radicalised when doing porridge?

There's legal intercept (judicially controlled) on most comms already, WhatsApp falls outside this - no need for the brouhaha Gov should just change RIP to cover it.
Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

The only way to do that is for it to be unencrypted (in which it's easy for hackers to get at your messages) or for them to install a back door which sooner or later will fall into the hands of hackers.

If encryption isn't secure then ecommerce will die.

So, you're all using VPNs then ??
Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.

The hack will happen and driverless cars will be infected by the Maldonado virus. Carnage in the first 100 metres.

Gosh no - that's what the government want you to do. They're in cahoots with the VPN providers because they know the terrorists all use 'em.

Best bet is just to write complete jibberish.

I woud use a VPN, but don't know what one is, so I'm using a quill and parchment. Good luck intercepting that one, mofuckers.

My pigeon came home yesterday with sure signs of tampering.  It was the fear in his eyes that gave it away.

VPNs are for people who don't care about data security. I use high entropy one-time-pads and never distribute the counter-pad. I never even generate them. Decode that, motherfuckers. You'd need the Library of freakin' Babel.
