  • I have been feeling down recently, work is a bit of a nightmare since Christmas, stress with the band etc.
Got a huge list of jobs to do around the house, missus is cutting back on her work too, so the pressure is on me more than ever to win that bread.

Shes taking me to the gym tonight, frankly I'm dreading it, partly cos I need to organise a babysitter, partly because I'm not comfortable there anymore.

Its just a phase im sure, just need to stop being a princess and crack on lol.
Right, the whole "stop being a princess" thing has got to stop NOW.  What you described looks VERY familiar to me and it's no surprise you're feeling like you do.  It sounds to me like you're on the edge of a very steep and slippery slope to a place you  REALLY dont want to go.  Treat this seriously now and cut out all the "crack on" bullshit or this 'phase' could totally engulf you and your family for years like it did with me. Please go and see your Doc.

Don't worry, I've been down that road with depression before, eating disorders,CBT, counselling etc.

Im just tired, but I've looked at VitD and it sounds likely.

I think it's possible, as the main good sources don't really appear in my diet much, plus I work indoors all day, or in my van, but it turns out glass blocks a type of radiation that helps with the vitamin D thing.

I went to the doctor about being absolutely knackered a few years ago, they did blood tests and found nothing.  Still smoke 20 a day, still do a physical job.  In all honesty it's why I took up drinking every night because the hangovers, lethargy, sleepiness and anxiety were there without drinking anything in the first so after drinking every night the actual hangovers I got were actually less intense than what I got when I was sober and I could actually function with more clarity.  Giving up drinking for a week now after getting holiday heart on Monday afternoon after a super Sunday, which has happened a few times now and isn't nice because you can't sleep or work and sit there feeling like you are going to explode.

Not sure if it's vitamin D as I am strawberry blonde.  I do know that the harder you physically work, the better you feel and the more control you feel you have in your life the less everything aches, that is a fact.  Vitamin D deficiency is associated with aching bones and lethargy and brain fog though.  For me personally, either it's something fatal or a combination of smoking and eating is causing my guts to swell up, which they do all the time and are really painful, so it's orobably something to do with digestion and actually getting food into the system or something, I've never been able to put on weight.  I've had this for over twenty years though, it's always been like that, I know I'm lactose intolerant but maybe there is something more to it.

You can fix a lot by getting some aerobic exercise though.  Although suppose that at 42, I am at an age now where anything could happen but I don't eat all that well either and tend to ride empty until I burn out that is just as important as exercise.

I have periods of lethargy too, Ben.
I had my thyroid checked a few years ago as part of some blood tests and it came back that I have an underactive thyroid. I have been on Levothyroxine since which has helped.
Thyroid medication is not the full answer though, a good diet and plenty of water makes the most difference in my experience, if I forget to take water in the car with me (I'm in sales) and spend the day drinking coffee I end up knackered.
I've had some sleep problems too which were mostly down to stress and I found that avoiding caffeine in the evenings and stopping eating/drinking a couple of hours before bed improved my sleeping pattern. Red bush tea only after 6pm! I like Tick Tock Rooibos tea.
Tell you what, I've been doing loads of decorating in the evenings lately and I'm sleeping like a log!

  • I got back in today just after 6, barely able to function, played football with the lad, helped make dinner, put lad to bed.

Ive just had to give up on playing guitar again...... which makes it the 423rd night in a row.

Im in bed, it's bloody not even half 8!!!
    my eyes are closing.

Why do do I have no energy?

    1. Remove all internet/tech/TV from the bedroom. You're posting from bed, so we know it's there! I 'cleaned' my bedroom of everything but bed and alarm clock a year ago - never slept better in my life! :-)

Really really can't sleep without my headphones on, usually music, recently YouTube vids on gear rundowns, I'm asleep within 20mins.

Vitamin D deficiency is very common in the UK at the end of winter. (Caused by lack of sunlight, linked to all sorts of health problems in Northern countries.)

This talk of clock change: sorry I don't buy it at all. Its one hour ffs. A one hour time change takes you a day to adjust to that's all.
Even the worst jet lag, you allow for a day recovery for each hour of time difference, so this BST change is nowt.

No-one complains of this when they go to Spain for a holiday do they?

SAD - there is a lot of evidence to say its a myth too.

  • Hi mate! Probably not related at all but do you suffer with hayfever or any other allergies?
after endless visits to my GP and out of desperation I went to see a really good allergy specialist who confirmed multiple allergies.
Trees start releasing their pollen from early March to about May. It really knocks me about, lethargic, heavy legged, low mood, poor concentration, sinus headaches and frigging migraines.
I have two young kids who are an absolute handful most of the time and they only add to the exhaustion.

Ben, very simply, are you drinking enough water?
    Does Tea count?
i take a 2 litre flask and a full thermos cup with me to work everyday, so that's pretty much 3 litres.

    I always finish it.

I feel my life life is spent peeing in lay-bys.

No, it's got caffeine. Which could explain your symptoms by itself, really. I used to drink loads of tea and coffee, and I still drink too much but I'm no longer lethargic.

    @professorben

that;s a lot of tea! Tea is a diuretic, so actually makes you pee more than if it were water.

If I were you, I would have a look at lifestyle first. Eating well? Cut sugary stuff down, eat more fresh fruit and veg, cut down on red meat.

    Drink tons of water.

Brown bread, not white. Cut out biscuits and cake. Cut down the booze if you like a tipple cos it knackers up your sleep (sadly).

Don't use a phone or tablet in bed.

Try and get a bit of regular exercise in a few times a week, even if its just a walk.

Take a course of vitamins with iron in them for a couple of months.

See where that takes you for starters.

You are probably just a knackered over worked parent, like a lot of us!

The clock change in the spring majorly screws me up every year without fail. It's usually sets off another episode of depression for me.  I don't know why, I don't understand it at all, but the evidence of previous years is undeniable.   Sure enough, Sunday night was the worst nights sleep Ive had since about this time last year.  Horrific dreams, physical punching and kicking in my sleep and waking up utterly exhausted. It's horrible.

SAD doesn't exist? Do me a favour. I've watched my father battle with it every year like clockwork for the last thirty years.

Yeah I'm pretty sure tea does not rehydrate you, as nice as it is. When I lived in Vienna it was a standard thing that if you had a cup of tea or coffee you had a glass of water with it as well. It was actually more enjoyable as well for it.

As boring as water is, I'd give up tea completely for a couple of weeks and drink the right amount of water each day and see if that makes much difference. It's easy to measure out if you get a fewbottles of Vittel or whatever so you can make sure you take enough volume with you each day.

If you're going to try the supplement tablets as well, taking them with water will also be better for you. Often I'm convinced that when I take a paracetamol or ibuprofen for a headache, it's actually the glass of water that fixes it not the tablet.
Please note my communication is not very good, so please be patient with me
