Working from home

Anyone else do this?

My company IT system is cloud-based, so all I need is an Internet connection to work. I've had to stay at home today 'cos the blokes are here attacking my conservatory roof to find a leak.

So far, I've got my usual amount of end of month work done in about a third of the time, posted some shite on here, searched eBay for stuff (I don't actually need anything, but old habits and that), paid my credit card bill, and made two cups of tea.

I've put all this productivity down to not having a telephone ringing, people wandering in and out of the office passing the time of day, and my secretary jabbering on with the cleaner. Plus the missus has gone out.

It's a clear win-win all round, and I'm considering doing it more often. I need to get to grips with some new tracks I should have learnt about 3 weeks ago, which now means the afternoon is nicely boxed off.

I have the opportunity to do it but choose not to as I prefer to keep home as work free sanctuary of sorts.

Go to the office & do my work.....then go home & switch off. (Or more accurately, switch on.....the amp
    :))).

  • I'm working from home now. today I have played guitar for an hour, sanded and varnished the next step up my staircase and, um, done about 30 minutes work. Love it.

    I usually work from home.

It can be great - but it is very hard to split work / home life up. Especially if you can see work that needs to be done in your field of vision while you are trying to relax.

It's not unusual for me to do 3 weeks without a weekend off, in fact that is becoming normal.

Not good for a healthy stress free life!

I work from home. Or more accurately I drink coffee, listen to music, browse the internet and occasionally tinker with amps, pedals and guitars at home.

I work from home, it has its benefits and its drawbacks..

Benefits - yes, you can have a little "downtime" without someone peering over your shoulder, you certainly get more done, no travelling, you certainly will save money ( I do anyway, no Starbucks, choccy bars etc etc)

Drawbacks - you can become a little "hermitised", lack of office banter, sometimes too much time to browse Ebay and get GAS!!, you'll sometimes find you work longer or more "I'll just check a quick mail" at 8.30 at night..., it does get boring after the "honeymoon period"

You have to have an "office" area so it makes you feel like you are in work and you will need to discipline yourself to keep work in "that area".

Tis nice though most of the time, especially in my case as my gear is also in the same room!!

we work from home and for ourselves. I love the fact that I can start work in my jammies. When I worked in offices that kind of thing was frowned upon.

I'm not locked in here with you, you are locked in here with me.

I used to work from home two days a week before I took early retirement :-) It's essential to discipline yourself from the outset, otherwise you'll do half and hour's work, then tea and an hour of daytime TV, another tea, 15 minutes work, elevenses, 30 minutes work, bit of telly, lunch, more telly, short nap, 30 minutes work, tea and biscuits, 20 minutes work, Oh! Pointless is on, so that's me done for the day!

All of that is why it's worth doing!

I'd love to be able to work from home but my work is simulation-based engineering so I need expensive PCs and software licences,,
In a few years though when cloud simulations will advance and become cheaper I may think of setting up a private consultancy from home.

I'd need a dedicated work-space at home though, somewhere to dress and go to in the morning.
Hopefully by the time I can choose to work from home I'll be able to afford a house with a spare room (additional to the music spare room that is,,)

I often work from home - it's particularly useful if you've got something like a long proposal to write, without disruption, or lots of phone meetings. I think it's a great idea, so long as you're self-motivated.

    edited March 2014

I trialled it over a 3mth period for one day a week and my productivity went through the roof as I wasn't being interrupted or distracted, be it for work reasons or by my right-wing colleague, who's like a walking, talking Daily Mail - aaarghh!!!! When I took a break, I'd play some guitar or prepare the evening's family meal or do some household chores and it greatly assisted with "household management" and the school runs. It suited me down to the ground and I couldn't believe how focused I was.

I also worked out that if I worked from home, I'd save £5-6K a year = travel (train and car), bought food, childcare, plus I woudn't have the stress and hassle of travelling to and from Central London each day and spending 3hrs with the great unwashed! However, all this means nothing as whilst the results stood up, my company decided not to allow me, or others, in my department to do this full-time or on a regular basis. The odd day due to a tradesman coming round etc "might" be acceptable but I'm still fighting for 1-2 days a week.

It gets a +1 from me.

I've worked from home for myself since 1999 ... there's nothing like a five minute commute to work. I'm lucky in that I have a dedicated office built into my house with dedicated phone lines and an answering machine. There's nothing like working for yourself .. freedom. no office politics, no commuting and if in the summer I fancy a cold beer at lunchtime with a cheese roll I can do so ...

I work from home in my second job (furniture making), I find that I get loads done and amazed sometimes how slowly a day can go by, if I'm at proper work then I get nowt done.

Five minute commute working from home? Where do you live, Buckingham Palace?

I've worked from home on and off for the last 12 years. You get more done, quite simply there are fewer interruptions (although the lack of socialisation can make the day drag a bit).. The dress code is better as well. And in the summer it's good to be able to start early and take a break in the middle of the day.

Mind you, if the coffee's crap, that's entirely my fault.

Not quite ... a decent size though .. the office is at the back of the house and my bedroom is at the front. Scrotum, my wrinkled retainer, always wakes me at 7.00 am with an espresso and a well ironed iPad with the Times app running ... ;-)

I would like to. However we're just coming up to system integration time, and for that it's better to be on the company's premises.

    Bollocks!

I was just taking an guitar outside to take some pictures of it when my right knee gave way, and I collapsed on the porch. Initially, I thought I heard a crack, and wondered if I'd snapped something, but the pain eased off after a couple of minutes. Now I'm hobbling around. My left wrist is already very sore from lifting band gear.

Best of all, camera still in hand, I'd inadvertently pressed the video 'on' button, and recorded the whole event, complete with 'Aaaargh' sound effects, although the front door and the porch are the only good shots.

I'm wondering if it's time I packed in all this band carry-on.
