A les paul carve has 2 distinct (mostly) flat planes. the neck angle plane at 4ish degrees and the pickup angle plane at 2ish degrees   Its obviously not totally flat, but flat enough to support a larger template well

My neck pocket template is a a few inches longer than the body.  it is attached to blocks at each end with some hinges so i can tweak the angle as needed. The neck section of the body is angled and the template rests nicely on that. The body is stuck to a workboard and  the hinged blocks get clamped in place

not my pic, but this shows a similar neck angle  being cut - it extends quite nicely either side of the pocket and even after sanding the carve i

Unbound would look grand. Still set on a burst though? This’d look great under wine red.
    you got me thinking

I think that may be a bit too modern looking for what i am after.   If I went red it would have to be more of a Lucy shade

Thanks Wez. So, a mix of usable flat bits and a jig.

Yeah, I spent a lot of time worrying about it on the first one.

got the fretboards prepped for these 2

    IMG

The indian is nicely quartered and straight grained.

The ebony is less perfect.  It has colour variation and a light flame, but you can just about make out that the grain is still fairly consistent. nothing too erratic going on

yes, its got all the mahogany colour tones in it.

it has some subtle figure  on the bottom half, and a few weird blisters on the top half.  if i was the poetic sort i would compare them to asteroid impacts on Jupiter

it will all look good under a black finish ;)

i skipped ahead a few steps in the last 24 hours.

Body got chambered until it weighed 4.1lb.   I stained it black inside in case i want to add an f-hole later, but i probably won't

i glued the top on and decided to go back on my comments regarding double bound customs...   its routed for 7-ply binding front and back, still need to finish the bit of the carve in the cutaway though.

And i have roughly carved the top

Do you make up your own seven ply banding or have you found a source for it, I've more or less given up making custom Les Paul's as finding the banding is almost impossible now. Tried making my own not always very successful, be very interesting to find out how you do it. I normally only look for five ply banding WBWBW.

Your life will improve when you realise it’s better to be alone than chase people who do not really care about you. Saying YES to happiness means learning to say NO to things and people that stress you out.

I am using 2 lots of 3-ply and a single white on the outer layer - just from allparts.  All full depth,  rather than a stepped channel,

    It goes 1x White, 1x B/W/B, 1x W/B/W

I am still debating whether to glue them all at once, one at a time.   either way, its going to be a pain

here are a few short lengths showing the fit

and compared to a 70's custom...

I am not going as thick for the outer layer
