what potential uses could there be for a spare knob on a guitar?

I might make an SG type guitar, and if I did I would probably have 1 volume, one tone and one as a selector (as I like the look of Alegree's Chameleon pickups). I'd prefer to keep the 4 knobs look, but I'd rather the last one did something rather than just sit there looking pretty.

Any suggestions for what it could control?

A bit left field but you could stick a boost or mid boost circuit in there? Or a blend pot?

Not sure if you can do a spin o split for more than one pickup on one knob though, might have to use 2 or just split one pickup

A rotary switch to put the two pickups out of phase for that Peter Green sound.

Why not just have it as a simple kill switch

I'd have two volumes.  The ability to mix the pickup volumes in the middle position can give you a lot of good sounds.

How about a sarcasm gauge, turn it up to 10 for full of sarcastic wit, roll it back for more passive aggression, until you hit zero where you're at full incapability of a joke and get instantly offended

lol that's terrible, poor guy was innocent but I had thought he was guilty for years til I actually checked.

That's what these media smear campaigns do - people end up remembering the accusations but forget the tiny "he was actually innocent" articles hidden in the paper
