I just stumbled upon these video tutorials and thought it was worth a look

If we are not ashamed to think it, we should not be ashamed to say it.

Yeah she is great! I learnt a few of Marr's riffs from her videos.

    Ace!

Think he plays it in the open position though, D, C, G, D etc.

Sheila is a bit of a Bowie/Ronson tribute. 'throw your homework onto the fire' - ripped from Kooks.

The opening to I Started Something is also a nod to Cracked Actor.

Sheila has got to be one of their worst songs. I thought it was a tribute to the perishers theme tune.

Alison Bennett gets the job done though so it's a yes from me.

    "Smithsonguitar" is interesting aswell.

The Smiths and Morrissey are IMHO stunningly good, just exceptional.

The times in life I've felt totally alone, the Smiths have always been there!

The little solo fill thing in the fade out of LNIDSLM is one of the handful of bits of guitar that really made me want to play.

    1.20 for the main riff.

Gorgeous. So much of his guitar stuff is hidden in the mix.

The Smiths also make even really solid musicians like Rabea look human as well, as he manages to truly murder some Smiths tunes...

There is a video on YT of Marr playing Rory Gallagher'' strat. For some reason he tries playing blues licks on it and sounds pretty average. The genius of him is managing to be a virtuoso without being flashy. He has written some truly brilliant riffs

To be fair he doesn't do any worse than most of the rest of us.
One day I'm going to make a guitar out of butter to experience just how well it actually plays.

  • I love what Noel Gallagher said, something like : not even Johnny Marr can play what play what he played on the Smiths records.

True, but normally he does extremely well, and it wasn't meant as a criticism of Rabea, who is a great musician, but more a sign that despite being written off by many Marr is a complex and unique player.

I'm in the "pro Andertons guys" camp, not into bashing any of them. :)

Here’s a good video showing how a seemingly simple Smiths riff is built up:

Daniel Earwicker’s videos are great for Smiths fans, also modfather1965.
