Lovin' that Pelham blue Firebird-esque one!

  • In between Hurricane builds, I've been working on a new model i'm tentatively calling The Dakota.

    Here's the neck heel detail...

This looks so elegant and smooth. Why did you change it for the production model to a more traditional looking neck heel?

Evening all, thought it was time to up date this thread with a couple of recent builds, I haven't been posting here much, various reasons, one being that it's been non-stop in the workshop. So here's the latest fruits of my labour...

Dakota '65. A nod to the rare 'transitional' 'bird of 1965 which gives the standard Dakota more of a 50's Special voicing:

The Dakota in Aged Pelham Blue:

    Dakota One:

All three guitars have just landed with @DougCoda if you'd like to try them in the flesh.

    Hurricane Standard

    Aged and Faded Sunburst. This one has just arrived at @ATB_Guitars ;;

Also, I have a new model in the works, the Hurricane '59. All the important 'Burst' measurements and appointments that the replica guys love but still retaining an 'Ivison' vibe. Currently getting it's aged clear coats and burst fading...

Here's the completed new model, The Hurricane '59.

I'm just firming up the full spec but this one is all old growth Honduran woods, Dual PAF's, full '59 top carve (measurements taken from an original), '59 Profile Neck, Pigtail wraparound bridge, CAB binding and Celluloid inlays.

And here it is next to an original 1960 Les Paul Standard I was able to compare and contrast with and check tone & feel...

  • Incredible work!

My only concern would be "dacota" seems a bit over used as a name?

I tried a few at ATB a couple of weeks ago. I very much liked the Dakota with the 2 firebird pickups

Thanks @markj@rayttk! I've got another one being uploaded in the next week...

Here's a few things I've been working on since the Christmas break, which will hopefully be ready in time for The Guitar Show in Feb...

First up, this particularly lovely flamey Korina Dakota...

The second Hurricane '59 ready for a faded Cherry Burst....

    And three more Standard Dakotas.

The two blue ones are in the base coat stage and will end up as aged, greened out Pelham Blue. I had my paint supplier match the original GM paint code - originally a 1960 Cadillac colour - which Gibson subsequently used. The Gold in the middle is aged Shoreline.

Here's another video....a few weeks before Christmas, it was too cold to do anything meaningful in the workshop so I popped down to ATB Guitars who have a '59 & a '60 Burst in stock.....so I thought it'd be cool to see how close my Hurricane sounded to the real deal...

Superb! Enjoyed that. Neck pickups were very close, I preferred the bridge on your Hurricane. Congratulations on a great guitar!

@IvisonGuitars a very favourable comparison. The Hurricane has the advantage of a calibrated bridge pickup which I also preferred

You joke about taking both of the original bursts but in this EVH interview from 1979 he confesses to spending "too much" on 2x 1959 bursts at Norm's. It was $10k for the pair if I understand him correctly (he is coy about it)

Interestingly he also notes that original PAFs were changing hands for $200 back then, about $800 in today's money. Perhaps not the best candidates for his wax potting experiments
