As a Roland VG-99 user, I suggest that the SY-300 would be far more controllable with a full compliment of external expression and momentary switching pedals. This would, of course, add considerably to the purchase costs.
I suspect that the pitch tracking in the SY-300 is a polyphonic development of the monophonic tracking in the BOSS GT-100. By comparison, the Electro-Harmonix *9* series pedals use granular technology. In many of the BOSS SY patches, the volume envelope of the synthetic sound exactly follows that of the guitar. This helps some things and not others.
