the bass [or whatever is the lowest sounding instrument] determines the inversion
all instruments sounding together will determine the chord

In fact.. Gsus4 is the second inversion of Csus2, and Csus2 is the first inversion of Gsus4?

Seems so.

Gsus4 = G-C-D

Csus2 = C-D-G

I was noodiing over these as a vamp last night...  without any flavours from other chords it certainly gave the major scale a different vibe...

I was playing with sus2 the other week and realised I was in the territory of this major hit.

I love the sus2 in the music of the verses and chorus harmonies and how it blends with the other chords.
