Projects for broken guitarists...***Warning Graphic Content***

What's Hot

Having completely munted my fretting hand for a good couple of months (...if you missed it elsewhere, I put my bushcraft knife through 2 tendons above my left index finger on Friday. Surgery Saturday morning went well but it'll be a lengthy recovery) I decided I needed some projects.

Top of the list was getting my accounts up to date, and in the last two days, my accountant has learned, via Onedrive, the sheer enormity of the setup costs for YBTB, and therefore is currently working out how many years to spread my spending over as a metaphorical clove of garlic to a vampiric tax man!

Then, to keep him topped up with receipts, I blew a few more quid to solve a problem or two;

Kids, and guitars. More specifically, kids are clumsy, and often come in different sizes.

My YBTB fleet includes 5 electrics and a bass, and during a session kids will move between them. This invariably involves clunking guitars, occasionally dropping them, and me following them around adjusting guitar straps.

So, with help from the delightful @FelineGuitars , and a great price and delivery, I present you with the new improved YBTB "please don't knacker my guitars" system.

Each guitar in the fleet, and the bass, now sports Dunlop Straplock buttons. I have a set of 4 YBTB adjustable straps (branding courtesy of my brainwave of getting custom seatbelt pads made, far cheaper than actual custom straps, and I didn't have to buy a thousand of them!) plus my own strap (the leather one) all fitted with the Dunlop locks. This means that each child can keep their strap for the whole session, and move it with them when they change instruments.

Should reduce the chances of a mishap and make for smoother sessions.

Now...what to do with the next six weeks...

I dunno! *I* want another nice one...but I have no intention of putting it into the fleet for kids to use!

Guitars are different sizes and tunings, so there's a reason for having a few.

What bass you got at the mo? Different scale lengths & so forth for different sizes of kids and for making different sounds?!

Course, if *you* want a nice bass, well, that’s different.. that could be a really good project ;)

The kids bass is the short scale Squire Jag.

I am currently contemplating the musicman range...possibly a Stingray but probably a Sterling or my accountant will have an aneurism!

I do have a keyboard...I've also got an Ableton Push I intend to experiment with while I'm played up

Thanks for bringing it though. That one's more for recording as it's midi

Definitely NOT for YBTB kids to play with!

The sterling’s are good - but there’s something about the impeccable build quality of the full fat stingrays - I struggle with the tone as it doesn’t fit my playing style, but they are incredibly impressive

Back on topic tho - you could do a partscaster bass...

I suspect a one handed build would be the only way to produce something even more terrible than I could ordinarily manage. Maybe with a serious head start from @GSPBASSES ...if he has anything Stingray shaped?

I'm also channeling my inner Def Leppard and trying one handed drumming

He def. does them as he had one fs in his last Black Friday Sale.

A danish oil finish would be easy one handed (!)

To be fair, I managed to get the strap connectors on all those straps one handed...and those things can be a bit of a bastard.

I've seen SRV play one. You need two hands and a twat hat!

Nah. You don’t. You need two hands for the muting and wah but just one or one of those silly neck bars for practice ;)

    Twat hat - optional.

"Now...what to do with the next six weeks...?"

Keep the hand elevated as much as possible, including on a pillow in bed. Swelling is the Enemy of regaining function.

Hope you're being watched by a good hand clinic. Keep asking questions, if you need.

I'm being very well looked after and monitored

I've seen them 3 times already, and I only did it on Friday

Ouch. Had a similar injury quite a few years back severing the tendon on the middle finger of my fretting hand. Took months to get full movement back - good luck with the recovery
