@pmbomb You're more than welcome mate.  And thanks for the tip, I'll check it out.

This week's evening job is to tidy up the home office/studio/practice space so I can actually get in the damn room, then I'll knuckle down and do all the boring stuff I've avoided for 30 years :)
That's exactly my project this week.

Very true, I was thinking of the sheep-based one. But of course that ran out so we went onto the Cornish.  And that ran out so we went onto the Irish.  And that ran out, etc etc...

  • They were nearly down to Yorkshire Water by the end.

Obviously there was loads of pissy weak lager left, but we weren't that desperate!

@modellista ;;I thought you'd been playing years. Good work. I want a go!

    My random 2p:

    * big thanks to @McToot for the drive, not just anyone can tolerate my aimless witterings for 9 hours with no escape!****
    * the Cambridge was excellent, spotless and great VFM. For reference it's barely 3 minutes walk from Magic Rock so that needs to be factored in next time. Lol @darthed1981 and his triple breakfast.
    * what a joy to have the run of a place like Sasquatch, thanks @Sasquatch_Bob for being such a genial host.
    * props to @Legionreturns and @Bridgehouse for the graft, it was L telling me it was such fun that got my interest re-engaged (I found the Water Rats sesh a bit frantic for my tastes and was unsure about doing another).
    * @Alnico utterly rocked the Comfy solo in his own way, passion and balls, loved it. And thanks to him for taking 10 mins with me on Lil' Devil, that was kind and considerate.
    * so glad we stayed on for Sunday, the jamming of Free World and Shook Me as a highlight. We could knock Shook Me into record/gig shape quite quick I think. I could have stayed another day, we just get in the groove, forget about the outside world, and we're back on the M1.
    * lol at our thrash version of Never Gonna Change at the club ... I do hope there's a vid of that!
    * I'm going to learn Ace of Spades and No Woman .. so I can join in the closing tunes next time.
    * I'm no longer going to call myself a beginner guitarist, that's put to bed.
    * my first ever bass lesson, from @CustomPedalBoards - A A A A A A A A. Ok, got it!
    * I played Bob's V, it confounded my prejudice of how a V woukd be, might have to get 1.
    * convivial atmosphere from smaller numbers, relaxed schedule, more time. Worked for me. The challenge for next time? Managing demand for places and avoiding cliqueism. Putting the price up would help alleviate financial stress on the organisers, but I think it would be in spirit to make sure no fboarder is excluded due to affordability.
    * people who shared stocks of drinks, sandwiches and smiles.
    * the north is not so grim!

The Free World vid up there ^^ epitomises what I wanted to do when I picked up my guitar 18 months ago (I owned it 35 years, barely touched it!).

These are steps on working out what I want to do with music - which is short accessible punchy rock songs. I'm going to leave the fine craft to those of you with more talent and dedication, and just push out crunchy crowd-pleasing (I hope) riffs instead.

**** to be fair he gives as good as he gets.

Ta muchly.  What's battery life like, in use?  Obviously it'll vary depending on how many pedals on at once for how long and stuff, but presumably more than enough to cover a jam/gig scenario on a single charge?  Also, any idea yet what they're like over time, in terms of number of recharges before they're knackered, and how they respond to potentially being left uncharged for a while?  I'm guessing similar issues to laptop batteries if abused/used heavily?

Sorry, should have asked all this yesterday, but for some reason my head was full of mush.
i've tried a few whilst prototyping and the volto seems best so far. how long it lasts depends on the total mA draw of the whole board. eg 1 analog fuzz that draws approx 4mA will last wks! but a load of pedals, the total load mA needs to be calculated to work out how long it can last. so that little batt board with 10 pedals on is 150mA total load, cause ther all low draw (except the tuna) and will last an all day jam sesh of about 8hrs on a full charge.
but yes its a lithium battery so same principles as laptop phone batteries, extend life by not charging them by topping them up all the time etc. digital pedals will drain to quick and also because not isolated from other pedals might induce a noise in to everything. so best bet, stick to analog pedals that cohabit with each other nicely.
our pedals for example all play nicely with each other and have low mA (as in 2-4mA!)  www.custompedalboards.co.uk/product-category/pedals/custom-pedal-board
all the gain base you'd ever need really.

Good feedback @pmbomb - I think the format works and it’s something I want to preserve - I would just say though that to run it like this weekend we will need to restrict numbers to 25 - if that means more weekends then fine, but anything more than that would lose the relaxed nature.

yup, a group small enough we could learn names and weren't tripping over each other, also with less people the practice rooms were relaxed, everyone got a go.

I guess it will be first come first served and if a reserve list fills up then I’d consider a second weekend for them.

The fly in the ointment is replicating the unique relationship we have with Bob somewhere else in the country. That will be hard without some specialist local knowledge. Either way I’ll continue to do the Huddersfield ones in this format regularly.

Something a bit closer to the south please!  Happy to go to water rats again if we didn't burn our bridges last time!

For the weekend idea to work I’d like us to be able to establish a good relationship with the studio owner as it may involve a sleepover to guard kit, and a level of flexibility over gigging etc.. if someone down south knows a good place and we can establish that then I’m happy to consider it - otherwise it will always be a one day job

aye, there's the rub. worth the journey from Surrey IMO, for those that can. Bob's is an easy place to relax, convenience shop and chippie across the road, pub down the way a bit. all on 1 level, not cramped.

@CustomPedalBoards Thanks, info received and stored in the brainbox

Regarding a "more down south" jam in the future, there's a studio local to where I live who have just had a refurb and sort out and were touting for business recently. I think the guy that runs it is a tangential FOAF - I'll do some subtle digging, or if all else fails just ring them up and have a chat about the concept, without any specific dates in mind.

Unfortunately round here accommodation costs are likely to be more prohibitive for a weekender, though, and it would take some scratching around to find an equivalent to Outlane. But none of it is impossible.  And much as I'm raring to do it all again, given that everyone has multiple commitments I'm guessing we'd need to let a decent amount of time elapsed in order to generate enough good will for people to get a pass out from other halves and such like, so I may have time to ingratiate myself with a few local folk, just in case.
