I'm leaving London and upping sticks to York at the end of the year.

Any York locals on here that can give me an idea of what the local music scene is like? Any good rehearsal studios/ jam nights/ open mics/ venues etc?

Thanks

  • York is...close enough to Leeds that you dont have to worry about paying hipster prices and playing venues where you're only allowed to wear sandals, tweed and a top knot.

I did a one night stay in the city last year and there were several pubs doing a mid week open mic that I walked to in the city centre. Google also indicated several pubs had live music at weekends at that time. The musicians I met were very friendly and none of them tried to eat me!
That's my only but pleasent experience.

I walked into an open mic night there about 10 years ago and Rick Witter from Shed Seven was on. Fibbers was good too iirc.

I don't remember Leeds being that bad.

I've heard Fibbers is good for catching 'up and coming' bands and a few tribute acts and the like.

Fibbers moved to a new venue a few years back. Saw Richard Hawley there. Great place.

There's plenty of music going on in York. This is a good site: https://tizyorkmuzic.com/

Aside from the plethora of Open Mics and pub gigs, notable venues are:

    The Crescent Community Venue
    Fibbers
    The Fulford Arms
    New York Club
    Victoria Vaults
    Kennedy's Bar
    The Phoenix (Jazz. Nice!)

What sort of thing are you interested in?
