  • Just got a '90 Woodcutter Rat2. Compared to my VFE Alpha Dog it's slightly more strident but tbh they sound all but identical.

I’ve just picked up @JamesSGBrown ’s Woodcutter Rat. I had a whiteface 85 reissue years ago. It’s bloody fantastic and is very versatile  :)

  • US made RAT 2 here, RT-080578.  I think I bought it around '88, '89, new in Denmark St somewhere not long after they came out.  "Stomp On A RAT" was their slogan at the time.  Worked for me.  I think it was the first pedal I ever bought.

I have had a lot of rats, lm308 ones, clones and regular new rat2’s...as well as turbos and dirty ones.

have to say the rat2 is my favourite...i hear the difference between the lm308 and regular rat, but i still prefer the new ones

currently have a japanese market white rat and a dirty rat. Not sure if the white japanese rat is different, but its my favourite rat to date.

I’ve had my latest RAT for a week now and I’m amazed at how the slightest movement in any of the controls give very different sounds. My usual trick is just wind up everything but as has been mentioned above in other posts, it is really great at lower gain settings and gives a fantastic core clean sound too.

I use a white face reissue rat and it's one of my favourite distortion pedals, but I suspect I'd be just as happy with a regular production one.

I think because there's so much range on the controls, they're all slightly different just by virtue of slight variances in pot tapers etc.

I had a Chinese Rat, Big Box Rat, USA RAT 2, then another USA Rat 2. The two USA ones sounded different, one was spankier on the note attack and the other was more compressed at the same apparent gain settings. Then a couple of years later I got yet another Rat 2 and did the ruitz... rooitz... ruuuuits mod on a pot so I could get some more body and take off the midrange edge, that was a pretty awesome pedal but honestly I usually left the pot around the default position.

Also had the Mooer clone, honestly I didn't think that was great - way more compressed and cloudy in the low mids. The Line 6 model is pretty decent (though I suspect not all would agree!)

You can buy regular production ones at decent prices, ex: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ProCo-rat-pedal/174538460969?hash=item28a34d8f29:g:rEAAAOSwCudfw43s

that's literally the first hit I get on my search

Yeah, I saw them too - I'm just talking about the premium for the ones of a particular vintage.

I tried a modern one and thought it was horrible.
I'll stick with the big box one.

I've just double checked eBay completed items.

    1986 Rat 2 - £225.00
Small Box "The Rat" - £229.

    '85 Whiteface' Reissue - £160

    Keeley Modded - £200
    JHS Modded - £200

Yep, they're not pocket money prices, but still nothing on a Klon!!
Lots of Nice Guitars, and not enough pedals!

Even 5 years ago, I'd have expected a "good" Rat 2 to go for about £80, and a chinese one around £45-50.

It's funny how the market changes like that.

No, and a Rat actually sounds good.

Mine is from '88 I think. It has lost its serial number sticker, though it has a 'Dan-O' builder sticker inside. It's maybe had a jack socket replaced, as the two don't match. It also has the rivetted battery box, so an earlier one I presume?... I was interested to spot what appear to be 'Mouser' branded caps: anyone know if these are original?

    I think, therefore.... I... ummmm........

  • @Gadget that's an '88, or at least that right hand pot was made in '88, week twenty something? Yes, changed socket by the look of it.  Maybe they ran short of caps and bought some in from Mouser for a while?  Mine looks to be late '87, also has the Dan-O sticker, no Mouser caps though...
