Book on understanding harmony?

What's Hot
my son was asking about 20th Century Harmony by Vincent Persichetti but it looks a bit hard work for a teenager who can’t read a pizza menu properly.
Not looking for something as academic but not too introductory either. Doesn’t have to relate to guitar ( although it’s fine if it does).
Any ideas?

Sorry to hijack the thread but have you heard the one about the guy who goes into a shop and says,
"I want a book that will teach me all I need to know about Harmony",
Guy behind the counter says. "you're a drummer aren't you?"
First guy says, "yes, how did you know?'
    "This is a chip shop".

    Haha!

A bloke goes into a library and announces, “I’d like to buy some fish and chips please!”. The librarian says, “I’m sorry sir but this is a library; the bloke whispers, “oooh I’m so sorry, I’d like some fish and chips please”

Hal Leonard’s first book on harmony is good.
Roland said: Scales are primarily a tool for categorising knowledge, not a rule for what can or cannot be played.
Supportact said: [my style is] probably more an accumulation of limitations and bad habits than a 'style'.

    Another wis lol moment.

That book looks good, third of the price of the Persichetti one if it doesn't get read but also looks more straightforward. Thanks.

Edit - it's written by Keith Wyatt, I find his stuff really clear so bodes well.

    This is the bible:

    https://www.amazon.com/Jazz-Theory-Book-Mark-Levine/dp/1883217040

It gets pretty deep, pretty quick though.

Harmonic Mechanisms for Guitar by George Van Eps is very good too.

Cheers. Probably doesn't need to get too deep too quick so I'm going with the Hal Leonard/ Keith Wyatt book for now.
