*SOLD* AKG C414 B-XLS

Possibly the best all round and most versatile microphones around. Sounds great on vocals and acoustic guitars, but  can also handle high SPL from drums etc.

I've had this mic from new, it's always lived in it's case and has been cherished.

£450 + postage

Is there any difference between the original SM7 and the current SM7B?

[modmin edit - question is valid, but pricing comment breaks rule 6]

The SM7B has a bigger basket that the windshield fits over. Capsule apparently the same but some gearslutz peeps insist they differ.

It's used mostly on vocals and guitar/bass cabs but the gain is too low for acoustics.

  • I own 2 SM7s, and up to recently had a SM7B. It’s subtle, but there is a difference. The older SM7 has a more pleasing lower mid and is less harsh in the top end. I never feel the need to EQ when recording vocals with original SM7, just sits perfectly in the mix.

Paired with the right pre, they sound amazing on acoustic guitars, it needs a fair bit of gain. The cloudlifter works well, adding 20db of gain if you need it on quieter sources.

  • I believe they changed the original design to help combat noise for computer screens etc

I'd agree that with a cloudlifter or a decent preamp you can use dynamic mics on acoustic guitars. Never tried an SM7 on them, but the old AKG D19 is a great mic for acoustic.
