Malcolm John 'Mac' Rebennack, Jr, known as Dr John, passed away of a heart attack.

I can't rationalise how how much this has thrown me.

He wasn't a hero, I wasn't a fan of his style, I didn't have everything he ever produced, but dammit, he was a huge influencer & we are all diminished by his death.

    Oh, man - tragic.

I saw him in 1971 in the Scout Hut in Dagenham!  What a great night that was!

Ahh. I have Brett Kingman on youtube and he's posted a Dr John track which seemed a bit odd ( it's a pedal review channel primarily) but now I see.
IIRC he was more of a guitarist than keyboard player in his early career so that was a pretty successful transition. Obviously a great talent and hugely loved by many. RIP.

A huge loss. A charismatic musician and a champion of New Orleans. A sad day RIP.

I'm a big fan.......great boogie / blues player with a Bayou twist. My piano playing has been very influenced by him.
He never came over very well on Jules Holland's shows when he guested but he had great timing and feel and a fantastic voice for his genre.
He re-vamped a lot of classic stuff as well as his own compositions but I think his versions of 'Maybe I'm right "and "Makin' Whoopee " are definitive.
