WTB: solid but unspectacular bass for recording £150ish

Would like to buy a P-style or PJ bass for recording. Can look like total crap, can be old, can be new. Must play solidly (ie, not too flappy on the E), sound alright and intonate reasonably well.

Also, only 4 strings if possible!

I have the pickguard and thumbrest too. I had trouble getting the pickguard back on so left it off!

I had this dilemma a short while back and found one of these, a Matsumoku built Aria from the mid eighties. They're brilliant and tend to go for 100-150. A while later I discovered that Andy Partridge of XTC fame uses one of these to track in his home studio. The P pickup sounds huge.
