Vintage Fuzz that works with humbuckers

mark_jwedgemark_jwedge Frets: 315
I have always loved the sound of vintage germanium fuzz faces and tonebenders.

I love the idea of having a great fuzz pedal that I can leave on all the time and use my guitars volume to go from clean, breakup, crunch, drive and then mayhem as needed.

Any ideas for a fuzz that would do this job well with humbuckers as I don’t have a single coil equipped guitar?

Inital thoughts are tonebenders rather than fuzz faces might help avoid flub so maybe something by proanalog devices? Also thought about a Veteran or a White atom? Wasn’t the Bonamassa fuzz voiced for humbuckers?

Black Moon. Very tweakable and sounded better than the White Atom to my ears.

^I'm about to put mine up fs/ft but the input and bias controls plus bass switch does let it handle almost anything.

The Veteran is best with Humbuckers.

    Black moon is also great.

Solid gold FX If 6 was 9 BC183 sounds incredible with my Les Paul especially when stacked into an overdrive.

If you want pristine clean to mayhem, I have yet to find anything better than a fuzz face, but the problem I find is they work much better with single coils and this time of year they also need a bias control.

Give the RYRA Fuzz-A-Matic a look if you like germanium fuzzes. Mine works fine with humbuckers and was quite cheap used compared to new prices.
Tomorrow will be a good day.

Does the atomic black moon sound different when using a 9V adaptor vs battery? Isn't that one of those quirks with fuzz faces that can't be avoided?

You're right about tonebenders. I have an old MJM 2-knob tonebender (Britbender) (before they started doing graphics) which is awesome with humbuckers, in fact, it probably prefers them.

We’re talking about the Magnetic Effects Black Moon and is all the fuzz face without most of the fuss

The kind of tone I’m shooting for is Nick Perri’s tone in the solo from the underground thieves song ‘whole lotta money’

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tslGoh3xPtA

    Solo starts about 2:04.

I know he tends to use a Les Paul/335 and other humbucker guitars into a JTM45 which is pretty much my set up. He uses fuzzes from satellite amplification though and even though Joe’s Pedals have them in stock they are crazy expensive!!

    @NorthenStomps ;@monquixote @soma1975 @Corvus @Lebarque ;

can the black moon / 6 was 9 / veteran get me into that sort of tonal range?

@JMP220478 that is pretty cool, see my post above about what I’m shooting for, sounds like the velvet fuzz might be a contender??

    1)  Love that song -- new one on me, just added that to my summer playlist!  Great guitar tone.
    2)  I don't think the Velvet Fuzz will do that.  I really like the VF and it hasn't left my board since I got it but imo it's not really a fuzz despite its name.**  It's sort of like a distortion.  Whereas the lead break in that song sounds like a fuzz to my ears... it has that ripping Velcro quality and the VF doesn't quite do that.

** EDIT - unless the "Big" switch does it.  I have it on "Tight" 100% of the time because the Big setting gets totally lost in a band mix.

I would say yes, generally. It’s very difficult to replicates another players tone as there are about a million different variants. But broadly yes, the Black Moon will get you to where you wanna be.

I think there is a bit of a cocked Wah sound in that solo as well (another one Magnetic Effects make!)

I’ve got all the usual returns policies and stuff so if you don’t like it just send it back, no problems.

^ agreed, reckon ballpark could be got running a BM with the right amp or dirt pedal and playing with the controls. Wouldn't swear to it or promise the exact same sound, but 'broadly' like the man says.

A fairly low value treble pass cap on your guitar volume helps radically when using  fuzz if you want it to clean up nicely.

Definitely, when  stacked into an OD or if the amp is cooking.
