Cutting a scratch plate...

Is there a sure fast way of designing a scratch plate if you dont have an old one for a pattern and the guitar isnt a standard shape? 

I bought a cheap guitar hoping i could flip it but it wasn't as nice as i'd hoped so i thought i'd do it up for my daughter as its pretty much 3/4 size. It's stratish in shape but a strat plate is nowhere near.

It twas me I'd start with transparent plastic like OHP sheets, not least because I've got a lot of it, for pretty much this sort of thing. Mark the screw holes, the routs, pickup slots, where to place the switch slot, neck pocket, all of that stuff. Then you can draw an outline shape around to suit. Now you have a guide to make a template or a trial plate out of.
