Hornby Trainset stuff valuation

What's Hot
I have some fairly old Hornby stuff (mostly 1960s) I would like to sell. All proceeds here- https://www.antislavery.org/

If anyone here knows about values, or know of a trustworthy knowledgeable person who does, I'd be very grateful to hear from them.

It's very little used, though some of the boxes are tatty, mostly from being moved/packed & unpacked. Some of the rails are not in such good nick, mainly from falling out of the boxes I suspect, but actual wagons; coaches etc should all be good.

(Was bought for me by my uncle when I was too young for it really & it was impressed on me that it was very delicate & also not really something that can be left assembled, so I think it's in pretty good order)

Thanks, any help appreciated.

You could try contacting this chap...

Quite famous as a daytime TV antiques and collectables expert now - I was at uni with him and he knows what he's talking about.

There was a model railway show on near where I used to live which I took my nephew to.. amazed at some of the prices of stuff for sale. If it's in good nick I imagine it will be with a fair bit to those concerned.
I now look out for these shows for my nephew (he's autistic and loves this) and I've seen there are quite a few, so might be worth checking local clubs and stuff.

  • Thanks all for suggestions & responses. @ICBM will try to take some photos & send to Laidlaws, if it's worth auctioning (presumably in a sale with other stuff of the same kind) that might be the way to get the best price.
    cheers

Remember you’ll pay fairly hefty fees to any auction house.

  • @boogieman   thanks, I do realise that & will need to enquire. It's finding the lesser of the evils. At least the auctioneers have to deal with the selling process. I can't imagine the fun I'd have putting this on ebay or bumtree.

Cool, just that a lot of people think auction houses only charge commission to the buyer. I had a quick shufty at their website and their seller’s fee is 18% plus VAT. Pretty steep but yeah I’m with you on the horrors of selling on eBay etc.  :#

I would definitely take a look at some of the hobbyist and collector sites, some have classified sections that you might get a result from. Best of luck.  ;)

    Vectis auctions? https://www.vectis.co.uk/

You can search previous auctions - https://www.vectis.co.uk/search?q=hornby&auction_period=past but I think you need to register to access hammer prices.

  • @Budgie ; & @boogieman again. Cheers. Will have a look at Vectis  & some of the collector sites.
    Appreciate everyone's time with this.
I now have to find the other box of this stuff, I'd assumed it was under the one I found already, but no, that one's full of automotive leaflets which is a whole load of other stuff I need to shift, I don't really feel comfortable with the idea of minimalism, but it has a lot to recommend it.

My Father was an avid and highly skilled/prize wining railway modeller. When he died I sold a lot of his stuff in a Christies Auction in London. I would have kept it but there was a claim on his estate from an estranged woman AND my divorced Mother and I had to prove their true value to the court. Bitches both...

Do you have a local Railway Modellers Club?  They would be able to help.

Alternatively, buy a copy of the Railway Modeller at your newsagent - in the classified ads there are loads of guys saying "We'll give you the best price" and most of them are straight as far as I know.

Or try Hattons in Merseyside: https://www.hattons.co.uk/ - they will give you a straight valuation if you send them an email with the details of what you have.

You could also seek advice from guys on this forum:

    https://www.modelrailwayforum.co.uk/

When I wanted to sell a classic mountain bike earlier this year I asked questions about value etc on a classic bike forum and the members were really very helpful. You might get similar helpful advice from model railway forum members.
