50s wiring hum when volume control is between 3 -8

What's Hot

Spent the day trying to sort out what seems to be a grounding issue on a flying v guitar with no joy.

the guitar is wired 50s style with two independent volumes ,  tone and 3 way switch.

All works it should with no hum on full volume but when the volume is turned down ( on either pickup ) there is some hum between positions 3-8 that does go away when the strings are touched.

I have  checked all the connections and resoldered all the points and ran crocodile clips from various parts to the pots but still  happens.

Any ideas on a fix or could it be the 50s wiring setup .. dont want to rewire it modern just to have the same issue  .

Thanks

It's normal if you're not touching the strings - that's why the strings are grounded.

There is no '50s' wiring on a V, because they're all '50s' - the tone control is always connected to the outputs of the pots because there is only a master tone. However, 'independent' wiring makes it worse. The volume pots should be wired with the pickup connected to the top terminal and the switch to the middle.

This is the original Gibson diagram:

If that's too hard to decipher, it's the same as this:

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

"Only two things are infinite - the universe, and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe." - Albert Einstein
