It's actually impossible to pick just one though but that one stands out to me. It's just the perfect balance of melody and technicality and pleases my ear.

I haven't really listened to a Protest record since Fortress, is there a more recent one I should try to get into?

I always enjoyed Kurt Cobain just shoving his guitar into a speaker and seeing what noises came out. I think I prefer live versions of just about every solo.
Yeah I love all their stuff, but Volition is definitely worth a listen, my favourite of theirs for sure. Pacific Myth is good too.

And wis for Cobain - In Bloom is the perfect solo for that song.

    Sonic youth- silver rocket
    very melodic

‘Made of Stone’ and ‘I am the resurrection’ are also great.

‘School’ and ‘Blew’ have to be my favourite nirvana solos.

Robert Fripp on Baby's on Fire
Fairly bonkers 3 minute solo starts at 1.30 but you really ought to listen to the whole piece for Eno's anti-pop
Damn, not heard it for a few months - it's giving me hot and cold flushes.

And polar opposite Fripp on Bowie's Teenage Wildlife
Several different solo styles through the song but the bit around 1:30 where he spits out a cascade of notes is sublime

Nice to see so many Television fans!

At 63, I'm probably a bit of an oldie on here, so many of you young ones might not be aware of the genius that is Bill Nelson.   So I'll take this opportunity to introduce you to quite possibly the greatest guitarist these shores has ever produced and yes, I'm biased as he's been my hero since I first heard him on John Peel back in 1973/4 but listen to these and you'll know why.  Be prepared to be amazed:

    • Track "A" - if you just want the solo, fast forward to 1min 47 sec

    • Track "B" - solo kicks in again (!) at 1 min 47secs

I love the solo on Start.  I know it’s a shameless rip off but I think it improves on the original.  Short, punchy and awesome.

Okay, i might have said Frank Zappa’s Solo from Cosmik Debris, or that from Black Napkins, but my favourite solo is Gigolo Aunt by Syd Barrett - actually two solos on the album version of the song 2:15 and 4:45), and there are some great licks all the way through:

Probably all of the Vai ones already mentioned! Think probably my favourite and most memorable one though is Adrian Smith's in 'Wasted Years'.

So many to chose......but one that has stayed with me forever is the Intro to "Don't Take Me Alive". Hit's all the right notes in all the right places.

    "There's things I want, there's things I think I want
    There's things I've had, there's things I wanna have"

  • Oddly, because it’s not really my sort of thing and that everything I love about EC’s playing is not represented here but I love the solo on Forever Man! Also, Francis Rossi played a total killer solo at Live Aid - not sure what the song was but it had a massive bend accompanied by a huge smile. Lowell George on just about everything but let’s say Dixie Chicken.

    I’ll get my coat
