I'm about to start cutting a new nut. Does anyone have a reliable printable string spacing guide?  I've found this one online, but when I check it by comparing it to a pre slotted nut it doesn't seem to line up - making me wary of using it.

I use that one though from a PDF that was posted on TDPRI. I see that's a Pitbull img, don't know if they nicked it or it the TDRI guy is part of them. Used it lots, works well for me. Pre-slotted nuts can be hit & miss, I have binned ones before with off spacing. Also there are different spacing methods, like even-spaces centre lines vs even gaps.
Also if you have an existing nut with good spacing you can clamp that with a blank and use it to slot the blank to copy it's spacing.

i recently bought a string spacing rule and it's just bloody fantastic, should've bought one along time ago and saves lots of pissing about with calipers etc and strained eyes

I made mini slotted rules from the printout from ally plate, cost nowt. The SM thing is an easy solution sure if you do a lot, not so cheap for occasional use at like 20 squid plus same again for post.

I generally use the StewMac ruler but find it's no good for narrow nuts.

For those I use the calculator on my website, transfer the measurements to Inkscape and print onto a sticky label.

I stick the label to the nut and cut through the lines using a razor saw to make the starting slots.

  • Thanks all. In the end I used the strings on a guitar with an already well cut nut as a guide, marked and cut very slowly. Worked a treat.
