Is there a cheaper alternative..can you buy just the wrap part from screwfix or similar?

Rapid online - It's a plastic weave (we used to call it megamide which may have been a brand) with self adhesive heatshrink at the ends to stop it fraying and make a neat end.

Google 'braided sleeving' plenty of shops to order from.
I think you can shrink it to fit with a hairdryer.
