Bartel era Tone King Imperial.  I have one of the early ones and it sounds extraordinary - different to the later ones even from the Bartel era which can be a bit too treble'y/ice pick clean (although I like them).  Knopfler describes his as "the king of clean" and has used it since the '90's and still does, which tells you all you need to know.  The 20th anniversary and Mark II versions are pretty good too.

Of all the amps I’ve had, I’d say the best clean was on the (relatively) humble Mesa DC-5.

If I ever need a bigger amp in the future I’ll probably seek one of those out again.

Deluxe Reverb all day long. I have never plugged into one and not instantly had a “yes” feeling
Bad Cat Cub III 15R or a good AC30
and probably my 5e3 when it had a Celestion Blue in it.

+1 for the Hamstead 60+RT. It's an incredible clean sound, and so much headroom for pedal fun.

I had a JC40 and really liked it. Did you ever try it with a compressor?

  • For ‘glassy’ clean Matchless Lightning, for ‘fat, smooth’ clean Carr Rambler or Two Rock Jet (or similar, they make so many now). Morgan AC20 or Abbey are my favourites though - fat glass!!

    Any Roland JC
    Henriksen (again any model)
No love for Fender Twin (plus a hernia) ?

Also AER60s sound glorious with an electric guitar, not just acoustics/archtops.
Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

Don't think you can argue with any Carr amps - just brilliant sounds and a modern day classic

Two Rock Matt Schofield Sig (way above anything else IMO, you have to have seen him live to 'get' it)
    Fender Super Reverb
    Dr Z EZG

    Honourable mentions for ;-

    Carr Rambler
Redplate Blackverb (too many bells and whistles)
Ceriatone OTS (not as glassy as some, but a better pedal platform because of that)
    Matchless DC30/SC30/HC30
    Two Rock Custom Reverb Sig
    Dr Z Maz 18/36
Any of the better Dumble SSS clones.

It was years ago but I seem to remember using a Dynacomp with it for pedal steel type sustain.

I tried a JC40 with a Fairfield compressor and it sounded even better.

Very limited amp experience with a few tube amps and a few solid state, with none of them particularly expensive, so best of the bunch was a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. Great pedal platform too. Awful overdrive.

  • Quite a few votes for a Super Reverb... they do sound incredible. I tried a mid 1960s SR and it’s clean tone heaven.

Lazy J 20 - great warm clean sound with the Blue

Princeton - classic Fender clean.  The 10" speaker seems to give it a clarity that isn't always there with a 12".

    Big Hiwatt
