I'd been eyeing Jazzmasters for a while - and the good reviews and reasonable price of the J Mascis got me intrigued.

Then this popped up on eBay. It's been modified from standard with a new pickguard, Seymour Duncan SJM2s, Fender trem, Gotoh vintage locking tuners, CTS pots and switchcraft switch and jack. A very decent set of upgrades which proved too hard to resist.

When I got it, the bridge was as low as it could be and the action was still too high, particularly at the top of the fretboard. A quick visit to Dan "the guitar engineer" in Berkhamsted for a shim and setup and now it plays beautifully.

I'm still adapting to the quirks of the Jazzmaster - it's even more trebly than a tele or P90 Gibson LP Jr, but it is now a really lovely guitar.....

Consider fitting heavier gauge strings. :)

Hmm - It had 11's on it when I got it but I've gone down a gauge to 10s as these are what the J Mascis ships with.
    I find 11's on a 25.5" scale is a bit of a workout too.

Interested to hear what gauge other folks are using on their Jazzmasters.

No Jazzmasters here, but I use 10s on 25.5" and 11s on 24.75"
Too much gain... is just about enough \m/

Remember the 1 Meg ohm pots. If a Tele or Strat had that value they would have quite a bit of treble too. Just nudge the volume pot down a touch or use the treble pot to tame the bite. It's there if you need it though!
Great advice. I'm too used to having everything on 10!

  • Looks great. My JMJM is probably my favourite guitar. Enjoy!

I got a new American Perfomer JM last week (need to do a NGD) and I use 11’s but I’m in drop C#. The 1meg pots go so well with thick muffy tones.

I was thinking about getting some 10.5s for my Strat; do they feel much different to 10s?

Saw Maggie Rogers tonight, playing to 10000 people at Ali Pali... Her guitarist has been playing a rather tasty looking jazzmaster on the tour. Looks suspiciously like another happy j mascis player...
